| | I must say I really love the crafts that Group had planned for this year's VBS. But to keep cost down this year we have ordered our crafts from OTC. So all our crafts are going to be different. However the station leader in the craft area this year is a high school science teacher so she will be adding some special expermints to add some excitement. but here are the crafts we are doing this year. 1. Science Goggles 2. Color your own Science bookmarker 3. Decorate your own Giant light bulb 4. Make your own science photo frame 5. Paint a science theme sun catcher F.Y.I In the past I did one big craft that lasted a whole week long. Something that they can work on a little each day. I considered doing the color your own science aprons. They kids could work a little each day coloring or use fabric paints. I would also let them put a nice science themed trim along the sides. Just a suggestion.

| | I found foamies in lab shapes at Hobby Lobby and Mardel's today. They have a lot of other stuff too. Hobby Lobby has one aisle (both sides) full of VBS stuff that fits with the various VBS themes. I also found neat stuff at Fry's Electronics. I posted a picture and info on another post about giant test tubes. They carry Wild Goose Brand science stuff (www.wildgoosescience.com). |

| | I think I found the cross on a boy scout website that someone posted last year on the Avalanche Ranch forum. See if you can follow this You need about 1 foot of cording (we're using glow-in-the dark string) 7 beads (UV beads are about the same size as pony beads) fold the cording in half, string 2 beads through the folded end, leave about 1/4'' above loop separate the two strings, string 1 bead on each "arm" put strings together and string 2 more beads push top beads down toward bottom push 1 bead sideways between the 2 "arm" beads...may need to reposition beads a little to make cross tie-off at the top I hope this works for you. This is one of my favorite crafts we've done. It is pretty simple once you get the hang of it and the end result is a "keeper" for backpacks, etc. |

| | Hi I love using your idea about the alternative crafts!!!!!! Thank You so much! I am teaching the Preschool group and I think those are easier crafts. I have one question that I am hoping someone can help me with. I am not sure where can you get the shrink art plastic? Is group the cheapest or can I get it at say OTC or Michaels? If you can help me that would be great! Thank You |

| We used food color and salt to make "sand" for the sand art stuff... It worked really well and was very cheap and easy!

| | I have been reading the forums for the last few years but this is my first time to write. I need help. I have been trying to find the hacky sack balls but the only ones I can find already are designed. I have typed everything I could think of to find design your own, but can't find them. How did you find them? Thanks, Tammy |

| Hmmm..... I can't find the DYO kick balls on OTC anymore, either. But I did find them on S&S Worldwide (ssww) - just search for 'hacky sack'
Don't know that they are as good of a deal as OTC was or even how they compare to Group's item ... we aren't doing this craft, so I really didn't compare prices.

| On Day One when we're talking about Jesus healing the unclean lepers we're going to clean pennies with a solution of salt and white vinegar. It makes them bright and shiny. When you find a shiny penny, instead of making a wish think of something that you are thankful for! I'll have a pile of pennies and let each child clean as many as they like and take the 10 cleanest ones with them. (We'll also take photos of each of the children for the photo project on Tuesday)
Day Two when we're talking about helping others. we're putting the photos in a bottle. I think someone else mentioned this alternative idea for making a picture frame. I'll start by giving the kids a peel and stick label to put on the bottom of their photo that has our church mission statement "Celebrating God's Love and Forgiveness, We Help Others", it fits so well this day and it will have the name of our church and summer 2008 on it. The kids each take a bottle with smooth sides and curl the photo up to put it inside then put other "power lab" treasures into the bottle like curled electrical wire and disc shaped packing peanuts and strips of mylar and colorful wrapping paper that's been run through a shredder. They can write ideas about things they can do to help at home, at school and at church on the strips of paper and put them in the bottle too, to help remind them that they have the power to help others.
Day Three when we're telling the story of Peter walking on water to Jesus we're making a water filled tube necklace. I'm getting 1/2" clear vinyl tubing and little plugs. The kids put glitter and sequins and curled electric wire into the tube and then fill it with water, to remind them about Peter. They connect the plug on the other end to make a circle and put it on like a necklace. The tubing is sold at aquarium or pond aquaculture shops. A necklace uses 2 feet of tubing.
Day four when we talk about Jesus living forever we're going to make a mobis strip. It's a strip of paper that has a half twist before you tape it. I'll give them VBS stickers and markers to write "Jesus gives us the power to Live Forever" on the strip. They'll be amazed that they will come right back to the starting point without turning over the strip. I think we'll also make paper helicopters this day because it's another paper craft. They get a 4" x 2" piece of cardstock. Cut down the middle of the top 2" and bend the flaps opposite directions. Put a paper clip on the uncut side and throw it into the air. It twirls like a helicopter as it falls. They can use markers and stickers to decorate those too.
Day five we're going to make goop with borax and white glue because when you tell other people about God amazing transformations take place, just like the chemical transformation from glue to goop! I haven't decided if I'll spring for Petri dishes at .26/each to put this in or if I'll use ziplock bags that they can decorate with stickers, but making the goop in a ziplock bag or disposable cup with a popsicle stick stirrer works well. |

| | chulamom, We are making our own goop for crafts also. I found that a pill bottle like you get from the pharmacy works great. I am using a recipe with glue and staflo starch. I am putting two marks on the bottle to know how much of each ingredient goes into the bottle and then the kids just use a popsicle stick and stir. They can then put a white label on the bottle and decorate it. One of our members works at a pharmacy and the pharmacy donated all the pill bottles we needed! |
