Just wanted to share a great idea that we are doing in May. All but 1 of our youth are younger (Middle school and freshman) so we decided to throw them a prom because they are to young to go. The rules are as follows: 1. Girls must wear a dress and guys must wear a dress shirt, pants, and a tie. 2. They can only spend ten dollars on their complete outfit. You know what this means... thrift store shopping.

It will be the night of our town's prom. We are having a theme (under the sea) and will be doing things similar to proms. Pics, dinner, music, etc.

Just thought I would throw the idea out there. I am on the VBS boards alot but just happened to venture here today!

VBSgirl,

I love this idea! We did this on a state level and called it prim....don't know where that name came from! It was a huge success! The students that would have not been able to attend prom due to cost, dates, etc were so excited. Some went out and rented tuxedos and formal dresses while others came in suits, dress shirts and ties.

What will be the spiritual focus for the evening?

Not sure. The pastor said that he would prepare a devotion for the night but he hasn't said anything about it.

great idea! We've thrown around doing something like this but for an after prom thing. We'd like to use it as an outreach event.

We just did a teen formal with the theme being Shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life...from Phillipians.  It was such a great sucess, I'm praying about next year's theme verse.

Joyfully,
Barb

Sorry, I've been out of it.  I had lots to get organized at the church for the summer.

Anyway, the formal went great.  The right dj really makes the evening and we were blessed.  This guy is a great Christian and a lot of fun.  He played all the right songs to get every kid up and participating.  The food was just okay in my book but no complaints from the teens.  We also had a wonderful photographer who went above and beyond what we contracted her for.  We're definitely going to do this again and probably need a bigger place.  I think there was one adult member of the planning team that needs to be asked to step down because of her legalism but the other adults helped keep her and her dh busy with non-relational chores.  Okay, that sounds awful.  But I hope you know what I mean ... some volunteers are great at the backstage stuff but really are a negative when it comes to relating to the youth.

Anyway, it was definitely something we'll repeat.

Joyfully,
Barb
