I was curious when everyone started.  I was over VBS for the first time last year and started recruiting in April and VBS was in July.  I was thinking about starting a month earlier in March but wasn't sure if that would be perceived as too early?

Our VBS starts June 1st and my kickoff night is March 9th.  This is when I will recruit the majority of my volunteers.

Our VBS will be held July 14-18.

I'm hoping to hold our first crew/station leader meeting on May 18. Therefore, I'm going to begin recruiting a few weeks before that.

Our KidsCamp (VBS) is June 16 - 20 and June 23 - 27, and we started recruiting 2 weeks ago

Since we do an all day camp, we have lots of adult volunteer spots to fill - including nurses, meal planner/preparers and afternoon craft teachers (which are not always my morning craft teachers, since many people can't take the whole day off to be there).

Now. I'm running ads on our screens, and I have signups about in the church. We put out a teaser science lab display last month, I've added new stuff to it every week.

Our VBS is in late July.  Here is the schedule we use:

Coordinators (oversee registration, elementary, preschool, snacks) - early January
Station Leaders (returning from last year) - February/March
Station Leaders (newbies) - March/April (later if necessary)
Everybody else from last year - May
Newbies for all other positions - June (or end of May if they can't wait!)

Our VBS is in July, I start to recruit "key" folks (station leaders, decorations, etc.) as early as the last day of the previous VBS...with a real effort starting about now (Jan/Feb) . I don't try recruiting crew leaders and station helpers until April with most signing up in May or June.

Our VBS will be the 2nd week in July. I have already started teaching our children in our Kids Club the songs that they will be performing on Easter Sunday for everyone who comes that does not normally come to church to give them a "taste" of VBS will be this year.

The other reason I do this is our Music portion of VBS is held in the sanctuary with all the kids. Our kids club kids will be on the alter teaching the movements to all kids who come. I find that kids learn better by watching kids.

We have already been recruiting and have 3 of our cl covered with teachers. I also involve the Boy Scouts in our church as our group leaders so that the adults can be the teachers. We also will pair up our 7th and 8th graders with the older scouts to be group leaders to prepare them to eventually become leaders and teachers.

The exciting part is that last year I had to cancel vbs. I spent time in the hospital with a stroke (only 41 yrs young) and because of this, everyone is really hyped that there will be vbs this year!
