| James (and others)
I am going to chime in here, and really put my neck out there.
I agree with the sentiment shared here that God has put you in charge of this ministry this year, and while I think you can be tactful and diplomatic, I do think you need to express God's vision as seen through your eyes....He will give you words and the ability for others to receive it.....'nuf said....pray first and let God do....
But, I must also say that I dont understand how you can take from or add to this program. It is just right (and field tested) to work with the ages and time frames as is allowed and written in the program. I always figured that this ministry (writing and developing VBS) is God's vision as seen through Group, so who am I to change it? I let the experts do what God has put before them, and I do what God has put before me (which does not include rewriting or editing VBS programs)....
I trust that God will show you the way to do this, but, I also agree that I dont see how someone can do a VBS in 1/5 hours, or even 2 for that matter.....make sure that you help them see the goal.....and that they see that in order to reach THAT goal, you need "X" amount of time.....the goal is to bring children to a new and or growing relationship with Jesus...NOTHING is more important than that. Not soccer practice, not dance cl....not anything.
I figure with that goal in mind....you do whatever it takes to do it.
Ok, so I am now off my box and will slip back in to "read mode"...
Blessings my friend....

| Thank you, everyone, for your input. The responses seemed to be unanimous!
And, I finally recieved an e-mail back from the former Director.
She says she is beginning to warm up to the idea, and we'll chat more about it at church this Sunday. I have a feeling we will decide to increase the time, and after reading your responses, as Director I will see to it that the time is increased.
I think 1 1/2 hours is way too short and will rush everything. Although I would like to see it be three hours, I don't see that happening at this point, unfortunately. But eventually (maybe next year) we'll get there!
So, it looks like we'll be doing 2 hours this time. Well, at least it's a little better! Again, thanks everyone for your feedback! I'm sure I'll be back with more questions!

| | Las year we did VBS 6-8 and were rushed! I couldn't imagine 1.5 hours! We are extending ours 5:30-8 and we will still have time for everything. The thing is, with being director, you do have to listen to the church but ultimately it is your VBS. Show the pros of having it longer. Explain how the kids are so occupied with activities that they won't get restless bc there is never a moment of just sitting around not doing anything. The games are pivitol to get the kids to wear off some energy that is pent up from sitting and doing crafts and listening to stories. Why purchase and follow a wonderful curriculum only to have to omit so much? Really push to get it extending at least a half an hour. Don't do it via email, call a meeting..show them you are serious about this.

| | We do it from 6:00-8:30 and have for years. We love that time frame and it works very well for us. We do release our 3 year olds at 8:00 and invite their parents to join them for the finale if they don't want to go home yet or are waiting for older children. We have found that 2 1/2 hours for 3 year olds that late in the day is hard. Any 3 year old that has a parent serving in another area is taken to worship by our 3 year old leaders. I think much of how you schedule depends on your church culture -- like do most families have two working parents, how far do they travel to your church, can you provide a meal, etc.... We are located in the city but most of our church members live in the suburbs and it can take time to get out of our parking lots.

| | After talking with the Christian Education Superintendent of our church, it's looking like we'll hold VBS from 6-8. (On Day 1, we'll start at 5:30 for walk-in registration.) We had a good conversation and shared our views about how long we want the program to be. Since our VBS is four months away, we'll make an official decision regarding the issue at our first VBS meeting in early-April. I still have yet to discuss this with the Preschool Director. But as Elementary Director, I will surely inject my opinion at the meeting, and although I'm ultimately able to make the final decision, I want to be sure to have the approval of the VBS staff. I don't want them to be turned off by me making a decision without first consulting them.

| Well James...How do YOU feel about that. I here resignation in your voice. ( Not that I hear voices in my head! )Try not to settle if you feel really strongly about more time. Try to go for the full shibang this year and make it make it clear that if everyone else is not fully on board after this year, then next year you will be willing to shorten it. I'm sorry to sound so pushy about the 3 hour thing...I just really feel strongly that you can't cut anything out of this VBS.
