| So this empty JM forum has been staring at me for a couple of days now, and I thought I should probably get a thread started. It occurred to me today that we could wrap up our JM program on a Sunday morning, and include the entire congregation. That's definitely one way to get them involved! The program would BE the morning worship service. I mentioned it to the pastor's wife, and she thought it was a great idea. Last year we did a 3 day program ending on Saturday, but left the marketplace up for Palm Sunday so everyone could see it after church. But that didn't get all the adults as involved as I'd hoped.
Have any of you done this with your HolyLand program? I figure we could do the opening Gathering, the opening Tribe Time and maybe Synagogue School in the sanctuary, and then bring everyone outside for the marketplace, playground, drama and closing Tribe Time and Gathering, and maybe serve a simple lunch of fresh bread and fruit, and maybe soup. Last year I served "Jewish chicken soup" when I did a lunchtime presentation to introduce the marketplace and recruit volunteers.
Please let me know if you have done something similar, or if you think it would work. Thanks!

| | That is a neat idea for a lunch time presentation. I always have the hardest time getting volunteers to come to meetings. What all did you do at the presentation? I think it would really work having it Sunday morning and it is terrific that your pastor's wife is on board with you.

| For the presentation I had all the foods laid out (the soup, pita bread, hummus, a mediterranean salad and some finger foods) and encouraged folks to fill a plate and watch the recruiting/training video and look around at the displays. I had set out the manuals and a sample of each craft, some of the items used in the Synagogue School and the Tribe Times, and descriptions of items we still needed. I had help wanted signs describing various jobs, and registration forms. I also had boxes or brown grocery bags filled with prep work to be done. For instance, one bag had squares of thin plywood and the oil-based clay for the writing tablets for Synagogue School. I included an example and written instructions for prepping the items. There were four or five prep projects, and they were all taken by people who were going to be out of town during the marketplace, but wanted to help before they left. This was a huge help.
I talked to the pastor this morning and he agreed to having the marketplace on Friday, Saturday and Palm Sunday. I would appreciate prayers for the planning process, as that is not so far away! Thanks.

| | We did BV last year, and ran it in the evenings on Sun-Thurs. We are Seventh-day Adventist, so have our worship service on Saturday morning. We had Friday to take down the marketplace and re-arrange our decorating to be ready for the church service (we had Gathering time in the sanctuary). Our pastor was very involved, since he was our Gathering time leader. He agreed to tie the church service in with VBS, and ended up leading us in a bunch of the songs, and then his whole sermon kind of recapped and built on the stories we had seen acted out all week. We encouraged all VBS staff & participants to wear their costumes for church. It turned out to be a really neat service, and I think it helped make the rest of the congregation much more aware of what we had just done. We got a lot of positive feed-back, and I hope we have more participation this year! |

| | Our VBS is not intergenerational, but last year we had two new families start coming after VBS. This would be a great idea to let the parents know what their kids learned about and draw the unchurched parents in to a Sunday worship time. Thanks for the idea! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of having some prep work out for people to take. People are always asking what they can do to help, but I never have an answer because I don't have a plan on what I can leave to someone else, then I end up doing ALL the prep work. I just love the ideas on this board!

| | Does anyone have the Jerusaleum Marketplace kit? I am very interested in finding the kit so we can do it at our church. This year GBTS was the first HLA we have done and it was awesome. I am trying to find the entire kit of Jerusaleum Marketplace and I almost have everthing I need for Bethlehem Village. I still need the gathering book, census taker book and playground books. |
