Do any of you catholic directors do anything special with the holy person of the day?  This is our first year to buy the catholic version of group's and I'm just looking for some additional ideas to go with the holy cards.

Also, I noticed that with the catholic Bible Power pack the kid-to-kid bible guide is not included.

Thanks for your thoughts......

We used saints cards last year and found that crew leaders presenting them felt very "crammed" into snack time.  My husband, the snack leader, says he would consider doing it again but having a child read the back of the card to the group before eating snack.  I personally think the cards are a bit dour.  They saints expression do not match the tone of the week.  I think the kids would be way more inspired if they had a picture of Pope John Paul 2 skiing (he was quite good you know).

Regarding the OK2K Bibles.  They weren't included last year, but that's all I know.

Good luck!

The catholic version probley does not have the kids to kids becouse the missions that are supported are not catholic. We always collect schools supplies and give then either/and inner city parishes or mirant workers. You can also go to the kids to kids web site and see what this year mission project is then deside if it is a mission you will support. Another Idea is to have a penny drive and the money rised be sent to the mission field of chose.  Our parish is a big supporters of the Poor Clairs.

The cards in the Catholic version were not actually designed to specifically be a part of Power Lab. Harcourt supplies all our textbooks in my parish, and you can order whole sets of these cards for classroom use. We will use the cards as the leader pack instructs, but we will also encourage the crew leaders to discuss them in more detail.

The operation Kid-to-kid program for us basically works the same during the VBS week, but you just choose to send the balls to a particular place, either locally, or a missions project you are already familiar with. You don't send them through Groups program. We will be donating ours to a local women and children's shelter.

Snack time will not be a good time for us to do the Saint cards either - too chaotic.  I think we will give them to the Crafts people - they always have extra time!  Last year they were teaching prayers ...

thanks sarahCBJ for the info on the saints cards...   that really bums me out that the saint cards are just from something else...

wouldn't it be great if the saint cards actually reflected the bible point and a story that connected the saint to that point?  Aha!  Now I understand why they don't flow with the program... because everything else revolves around the daily bible point!  Hmmm... think i just talked myself out of them.

I don't have my materials yet, so I'm not sure how the cards are supposed to be used, but I did a quick search for info about the saints on the cards and I think it could be easy to tie them in to the bible point.  For day 2, for example, Pierre Toussiant helped others by using his money to buy slaves' freedom and caring for the sick during an epidemic, and for day 4,  Saint Dismas was the "good thief" crucified beside Christ who He told would be with Him in Heaven.

I agree, the cards aren't the most exciting looking! I was thinking we wouldn't get them just to save money, but I couldn't think of a craft for day one, since we aren't making the buddy beakers. So then I saw Oriental Trading has a beaded rosary craft kit and that would fit with the Mary card on day 1.  So we are thinking of doing the cards during craft time also.

Christine

The set of five cards for each student equals about $.98, and is one of the "Catholic Features," so we will definitely be using them (and we are on a supertight budget). Even though the "People of Faith" card program as a whole was not specifically designed for Power Lab, these cards were specifically selected from the set for Power Lab, and they DO go with each daily power point. I didn't mean to imply that they did not go in well with the program, I was just trying to explain why they have a "different look" from the rest of the materials. I recommend using them!

Thanks for reminding me how the cards do relate.  I forgot about the script part that ties it in during snacks.  I was mostly thinking of the image, coloring, and lack of Group-type wording that would make it seem more part of Power Lab.  I'd really like it if it stated the bible point directly on the card.
