| I got these books from my public library and they're going to be great for HLA. See if your library system has them or check on Amazon -- some are available used for reasonable prices. All the Trades & Occupations of the Bible by Herbert Lockyer. The book contains a detailed description of every conceivable Bible-times occupation -- everything from the carpenter and goldsmith to the peacemaker and the undertaker. It contains descriptions of spiritual "occupations" like the apostle, prophet, and elder. It also has secular and spiritual occupations for women. Great background info if you're including some original shops or creating your own newsletters. Lamp, Scrolls, and Goatskin Bottles by Julia B. Hans. The book contains 7 chapters: - Dwelling Places
- Middle Eastern Cuisine
- Middle Eastern Dress Code
- The Role of the Scroll
- Family Life
- Farms, Fields, and Marketplaces
- Toys, Games, Music, and Dance
Each chapter contains photos, scripture references, historical info, and projects with directions. Bible Times Crafts for Kids compiled by Neva Hickerson. This book is fantastic -- particularly if your church is on a really tight budget. There are some fun crafts made from recyclables and the projects are coded for age-appropriateness. The book includes clothing, jewelry musical instruments, writing, baskets, mats, pots, and "other neat stuff from Bible times." This book will be particularly handy for preschoolers. Cooking With the Bible by Anthony F. Chiffolo and Rayner W. Hesse, Jr. This is a fat hardback book that costs a fortune on Amazon, so definitely check your library for this one. It has some fantastic recipes in it -- including all different kinds of bread -- that would be great for HLA.

Those books sound awesome! I can only find one listed at my public library when I check online, but I am going to be checking elsewhere, too. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas!

I have the Bible Crafts for Kids book and it is awesome. We are doing many things out of it to add to the crafts. We find that we need two crafts for each shop to allow for those who finish early and also, to divide up a group into two smaller groups within the shop. Thanks again for the hint on the book. I recommend it, too.

| I have actually checked out a book from my local library that is invaluable to me. I plan on buying it online. It's called The New Manners & Customs of Bible Times by Ralph Gower (205 ed.). It is an incredible reference for Bible times culture and customs. It has numerous color illustrations and photos as well. All of the family rituals that are in the JM lessons are explained in the book. Plenty of scripture references too. There are 18 chapters in the whole book: - Clothing
- Dwellings
- Domestic Activities
- Food and Meals
- The Family
- Education
- Agriculture
- Collecting Food
- Shepherding
- Craftsmen and Traders
- Towns and Villages
- Journeys and Travel
- Hospitality
- Social and Political Groupings
- Government and Society
- Warfare
- Leisure
- Religion
You should definately see if your local library has the book.

The Bible Times Crafts for Kids book is amazing.. it fits right in with the theme of JM and gives you some really good ideas on your costuming and crafts for the marketplace. I would recommend looking at your library or even buying it. Great resource!!
