Okay guys, I'm really coming up blank on ideas for this!

\We are having VBS inside because the Kansas weather is just too unpridictable in July! However our church will be running JM and another program during the same week!  JM will be for kids 3-6 in the morning and older kids will have Totus Tuus (A Catholic Program) at night.  We have the basement area which consists of a long hallway with 3 good sized classrooms and a large open space at the end of the hall.  I am planning on creating a backdrop for the Gathering using a simplier verson of the Decorating Places DVD.

Here's the problem: Now I still have this super long hallway and I have nothing to put on it!  It's boring white, and there are several tack strip type things along the wall.  I don't know yet if I can tape to the walls or not.  I need something to fill up the space.  I'm going to make my own version of "Bible Point Posters" and making them look like scrolls, but other than that I can't think of anything to do!  I will be making some plam trees, stryofoam rocks, things like that I could put on the floor but as for something for the walls, I'm at a loss.

Thanks guys!

Matt

Matt,

What about 4 to 6 ft. artificial trees?  Or artificial plants?  There are probably people in your congregation that could donate them for the week, or maybe your church has some sitting around that you could use.  You could also use painter's tarps, and tack them on the walls.  Paint them the color of brick, etc., and if they are off the floor a little bit, then the plants, trees, baskets, etc., would cover the bottom.  You could line the hallway with the tarps, trees and plants.  I can picture it in my head, but I don't know if I am explaining it clearly or not.  Hope this helps!

I like that idea, can you use plastic tarps or do you need canvas.  I was counting on having to use canvas for my Decorating DVD project, so I don't know that I could afford any more canvas.

God Bless,

Matt

Matt -- You can always use muslin instead of canvas.  It'd be available at any fabric store and big places like Jo-Ann Fabrics run it on sale all the time.  It's much, much cheaper than canvas and much lighter weight.  You'd be able to hang it easier without using as much tape, tacking, etc. as you'd need to drape canvas.

Okay, muslin, I was hoping to find something lighter than canvas since I would be hanging it from our ceiling.  I'll try muslin. I'm planning on attaching it to those drop ceiling hooks if they'll support the weight of the fabric, otherwise I'll have to find some other way!  I was hoping to be able to hang it away from the back wall so that my drama team could enter through
"doors", that I was going to paint on the muslin.  I don't want to tack into the walls.

God Bless,

Matt

There's a post on the forum from a director who completed vbs over easter.  Check out her balloon clusters... they look good and would be easy to make and hang in large quantities.  We plan to use them in our snacks area and along our classroom corridors.

We generally use big paper rolls from the local teacher supply to make some other wall decorations.  I might make some giant flasks and bubbles this year using the overhead.  I assume paper is cheaper than muslin, and recyclable.  If you don't have the clip art cd, just copy some from your fund-your-vbs poster.  We also like the group/harcourt posters.  Until we have someone who actually wants to be the decorating leader, I've kept the emphasis on our entry area and the church.  It seems to work for the kids, they're so enthralled by the content anyway.  And being kids, just suggesting the theme seems to be enough to carry them there

About hanging, we used 3m hooks last year to great success. Lots of strength and no holes or marring.  And it met the acceptance of one of our office staff if followed me around... I think she appointed herself as the wall protection service patrol... satisfying her built bridges for our first year vbs.
