I would like to follow up on the previous forum discussion about the song sheets for VBS. For those VBS folk who haven't had the opportunity to see the song leader manual, Group prints two separate song sections. The first section is lyrics only with directions for actions/motions printed out. The second section is a piano transcription with the lyrics and also with the chord notations above the staff.

One of our forum members commented that she hears many other instruments on the recording, which is very true; in fact, many of the recordings don't have piano at all, so we have a music transcriber/engraver who creates a piano accompaniment for those churches who may only have piano or who like the simpler acoustic sound, and also with the knowledge that many church worship bands use only a melody line, lyrics, and a chord chart--and this provides that plus more--or in some cases just a chord chart and lyrics, and the instrumentalists take it from there. We feel the cost to have the engraver do more extensive, literal transcribing of all the instruments on the recording would be cost prohibitive for most of our VBS users, as the cost of our manuals would skyrocket to cover the extra cost to add that instrumentation.

I am happy to hear from those of you who do use the song sheets for live music at your VBS and also for regular worship services. And during this forum discussion, there have been several suggestions that having the accompaniment song sheets printed separately from the song leader manual would be helpful.

In our 2009 manuals, we are going to perforate the song sheets to make them easier to remove from the manual, and we would love feedback on that. We would also like to hear your opinion on putting the song sheets in an envelope, sold separately for under $5 (cost not yet determined). Currently the song sheets do not cost your VBS program extra because they are included in the song leader manual. Would the convenience of not having to remove the perforated pages from the manual offset the small added cost to package them separately?

Sorry that this is such a L-O-O-N-G post, but I (as my kids know!) am an explainer, and I wanted to cover some of the questions and comments that have arisen on the last song sheets topic!

Yours in Christ,

Ardeth

Our VBS currently uses a live band and we would have loved to have more detailed music available for our instrumentalists. I understand not producing additional song sheets if the cost is too much...but we still hope that maybe someday this might be an option.

As far as the format of the piano song sheets, our instrumentalists would probably prefer to have the entire song on one long piece of paper. Right now they are literally cutting and taping so that they don't need to turn pages during the song but sometimes have difficulty when the front of the page is one song and the back is the next song. It could be a fold-out format similar to a lot of the station leader guides and it would be ok even if there were two songs per "fold-out" as long as it was printed one per side so as to not have any page turns in the middle of a song.

Hope this feedback is useful!

A foldout with one song per side is an interesting idea! I know page-turns are more problematic for guitarists than keyboard players and the reason that many churches use the simple chord chart with lyrics that can all fit on one page, or two at the most. But the foldout idea is something for us to look into. Thanks for your suggestion.

Perfing the pages would be handy, since we often don't play the songs in the exact order in which they are printed in the manual.  In my post on your previous message, I suggested putting the music up on a site for subscription-only download - that would save paper for what looks like many churches who do not use the piano scores.  One better if we could download piano scores, melody line leadsheets, and lyric/chord sheets with the ability to transpose them before printing (something like is available through the CCLI SongSelect option).  When we're doing the music live, the keys chosen by Group are not always the best for the leader - sometimes it just hits a half-step or full-step too high or low.

thanks for listening!

As a music leader, I would love to have the song sheets all in one book for convenience!  After all, you don't have to pull them out of the book to use them...

Please, please, please do 1 page chord charts for the guitar players out there.  I can't be the only one who ends up re-writing the charts so they are 1 Page.  This is addressed in forums annually but never given out in the VBS packet.  It would be a big help to those of us who lead from 1 page charts.

Peace in Him, Max

Yes - 1 Page Chord sheets would be great....even perforated music sheets would be ok.
