We have decided to tie dye t shirts on the first day.  I need help! The powder needs HOT water, which is not an option around the children.  The liquid looks as tho it may be pretty expensive...any suggestions?

Thank you!

a better idea and really cool is sharpy markers and alcohol . I tried it and it works so cool. You make a pattern dots or lines v etc. then you put it on a cup with a rubber band . Then you drop the alcohol on your design. You need to be brave to see what will happen to your design.  It makes a star burst effect.

God bless

YOu are welcome

I tryed it one a onsie and it work so cool. The sharpie markers work the best of all using all colors.  I use a creative memory pen and it didn't spread. So I have a cross in the middle and star burst behind. It look cool but too much money to let them use that pen of mine.  Love the effect so does everyone who has seen it .

God bless

Did you do anything to set it before putting it in the laundry?  I just tried it on a 50%cotton 50% polyester t shirt and it looks really cool.  It seemed to work best to just "doodle" not try to make a design.  But I love it! Thanks A bunch.  cjteapot@yahoo.com

I haven't done anything yet to set it . But if you throw it in a dryer or take and iron too it it should set it just fine.  The direct heat is better.  Those type instructions could go home with the kids as well.

Office Depot has Sharpies on sale this week - box of 12 for $3.99.  As an extra, the fine point black ones come with a free bonus box, so you get 24 pens!

I went in for the extra fine tip Sharpies.  I'm going to have the kids write the verse or the "Aha" saying around the bottom edge of the soap dishes when we make the first aid kits.

Doreen, can you share the directions in more detail?  I'm not clear on the cup and the rubber band and what to do with them.

Doreen got me going, and here is what I have done today and yesterday: I didn't do the rubber band and cup part.  I layed my t shirt flat with a large piece of aluminum foil inside the shirt to keep the color from running through.  I had some of those things the kids use to trace shapes onto paper...I used that and sprayed it good with alcohol and it is wonderful! I can post a picture if you guys/girls need it.  I took the shirt to church today with some other supplies.

Below is what a friend found on the internet.

Recipe 4 Easy Tie Dye
Hi, this is a recipes that was sent in by a fellow reader:
I have directions for tie dying w/sharpie magic markers. They called
for socks; but, I used kids' t-shirts.
What you need:
· Permanent Broad Tip Markers (sharpies)
· White or Light Socks (t-shirts worked well)
· Rubber Bands
· Rubbing Alcohol
· Spray Bottle
Instructions:
Loop rubber bands tightly around socks about 1½" apart. On T shirts,
pull some of the shirt, twist and rubber band. Press marker tip
leaving some areas white. If you color around the rubber bands, you
will get the "traditional" circular tie dye effect. If you run the
markers in big lines, you'll get a lot of color, but not a lot of
shape or design. Spray rubbing alcohol on socks/shirts. (I put the
shirts on wax paper and did it in the kitchen w/ the window open, but
I would really suggest outdoors is better). This will blend the
colors. (I sprayed the shirts a lot, and then several times). Set
aside at least two hours to let color spread. Remove rubber bands.
Iron, using a damp press cloth to set the color. Dry overnight. Wash
in cold, gentle cycle, dry in dryer.

You make a pattern or drawing then you put the shirt over the cup rubber band it too the cup.  Take a dropper and slowly drop the alcohol on the design . Its great it makes a star burst effect and is reall neat to watch my kids told me do it agian mom . I tried it on onsie I had here at home.  its easy and fun.

God bless
