| | We have around 100-125 kids so thats upwards of 375.00 for the buddies. I look more at cost per child so when you add 3.09 for the bible buddies, 3.09 for the kids packets, and 1.00 for the Catholic People of Faith cards that is 7.18 without crafts or snacks. I am already having to buy a lot of extra stuff and replacing the crafts to fit our program better. I do have a small budget, but we also are charging 10.00 per child to try to cover some of the costs. Does Groups programs usually have some kind of a "buddy" or keepsake? This is my first yr. as DRE and the first time we have ever used Group's VBS in the 12 yrs I have been involved b/c they only recently made a Catholic version. I guess since it our first time using it the kids won't have anything to compare. Also where would I find the coloring sheets?

| | Group always has buddies. We do not use them. The cost is way too much for us, and we cannot justify spending $3 per child on something that will in a lot of cases go in the trash (or to Goodwill and resale shops - where I saw a number of them last year). Coloring sheet info are on another post under "daily take home sheets." Which brings up another question. Do the sheets get left in the parking lot, in the classrooms, etc.? |

| | We don't purchase bible buddies...I think they're very cute, but kind of expensive. And, we already send so many things home with the kids (crafts, parent material, take home snacks) that I'm afraid they would easily get lost and left behind... |

| | WE USED THE BUDDIES ONE YEAR BUT NOT SINCE NOONE HAS MISSED THEM I think they are not worth the money for large lots of kids. Most of them are played with for a week maybe not then get lost in a drawer after that.

| I have to say i love the buddies. the kids ask us every year if there are going to be buddies again. i recently had a girl who was told by her mom that they would miss the first 3 days! she was devistated that she would miss those buddies! i told her i would save her 3 and that seemed to save the day. if anything...if they dont remember the story, or the verse...they think of god and jesus and that week. Think of it as planting a seed becky |

| I can't believe it! You sound just like us. We did Avalanche Ranch last year w/o bible buddies. We made prayer journals and glued in pictures. We also used the bible buddy stamps each day. Our VBS isn't until Aug. so we are just getting things started, but I was thinking about using the shrinkys instead of buddies this year. But I am wondering if that craft is too hard for little ones. Any feedback on that yet? I liked your idea of the science journal, too. Coloring sheets are at Groups powerlab website, I think.
I thought about trading cards but we are Catholic, too and I wonder if that is too many cards. Last year a lot of the People of Faith cards got left behind. We think they are important enough that we will get them again this year and try and do better about making sure they get home. Any ideas on that one, too.
I am one of two Christian Formation Coordinators at our Parish in UT. I was VBS preschool director last year and will do that again this year because I loved it!! It was SO much fun!!

| | Last year we didn't use the Bible Buddies, and everyone missed them. In place we used trading cards that I created and laminated. They were pretty cool, and everyone liked those. This year they are asking if we can have both!!! Oh well, whatever it takes to get the message out. As far as the shrinky project, for our kids, I am using the ink jet printer to put the outline of the characters on the sheets, then the kids just have to color and cut out. I also researched on the shrinky website and found that they can be "cooked" in a toaster oven, so we are going to have a row of toaster ovens to use. Also, if you have a large group the shrinky people sell a "Nonprofit" pack of 200 sheets for $50. I was able to get all 6 characters (including Squeaky Beaker) on one sheet, and they shrink to a fairly good, manageable size for the kids. Just remember to put your hole in first, and sometimes a "placeholder" item to keep the hole open for later is needed. I found a small screw or nail works well. Hope this helps.
