| I am ordering clay for our pottery shop, but I can't find any guidelines for how much clay to allow per child. Help! Is 1 lb sufficient?

| I think 1 lb is more than enough per child. Last year I bought 125 lbs. of clay for 300 kids and we had just about the right amount.

I think 1 pound is way to much, but then again it depends on what you're having them make.

I think we used 50 pounds for about 100 kids and had just a little left over. So much depends on what they're making and how many items they're allowed to create. I feel really sure that 1 lb. per child is too much.

| Are you using water based or oil based clay for the pottery shop? I read in one of the posts for the Synagogue School that the water based clay takes some special care to keep from drying out, but I suppose drying out wouldn't be a problem for pottery shop? I looked at Michael's today and was a little overwhelmed...Ready to use? Add water clay powder formula?

| You definitely want oil-based clay for the Synagogue tablets. That's the clay you don't want to dry out. We used that really oily colored modeling clay that we all had in grade school. You want self-hardening clay for the pottery shop. Specifically, we use Amaco self hardening Mexican pottery clay that we buy in a 25-lb. box. This will be our 3rd year of doing the pottery shop and this is what we've used every year. Here's a link to a page on the Dick Blick site where you can order it, or at least see what I'm talking about. That price on their 25-lb. box is good -- but I'm guessing shipping is a fortune.

| Amy, I am also in Ohio. Do you get your clay from a specific store, or do you order it? I was hoping I could maybe go get it at a store, if I have a store in my area similar to yours where you get it. Thanks, tbpw

I'm in northeast Ohio I get my clay at Pat Catan's. We don't have a Hobby Lobby in our area, but I'm guessing they'd have it, too.

| Hello all, I ordered my clay (amco self hardening mexican) online. I will make one suggestion. Check out AC Moore if you have one in your area. Not only do they have huge boxes for a reasonable price, but you can use their 40-50% off coupon on the clay! That is a super deal! Blessings, Jen in Pa
