I have my glycerin solution made, but we don't set up until Sunday so we can't try it until then!!!  Someone else who is doing Power Lab this week posted a summary of their week somewhere and said it worked great.

It's always important to remember that Group field tests their program with real kids in a real church environment.  As someone who has been to a field test, it is truly run as a week of VBS!  There are no stops and starts and it definitely isn't for the cameras!

Here is my son working the giant bubbles!  The glycerin solution worked GREAT!

I did wrap the hula hoop and I have no idea whether that made it better or not since we didn't really have a comparison!  LOL

So tips... we never could find a hard pool so we used a blow up one.  I ended up cutting the top "ring" into four sections and wrapping it around the outside because that was causing the bubble to pop.

Our cinder block was dirty, we opted for a step stool instead.  Worked great.

We used a plastic dropclost to cover the solution so it doesn't evaporate.  That way kids can try it out tomorrow as well!

I used the exact recipe already posted in this thread.  I made six gallons with the distilled water, Joy det and glycerin.

And we wrapped the hula hoop with cotton string that I bought at Tractor Supply, but you could probably get anywhere.  I do think it's important that it be cotton string though (not nylon) so it soaks up the liquid.

Im happy for you.  I used Group's solution and it didn't work.  We were just pretending there was a bubble.  Followed the solution exactly, put in overnight etc.

It could have been more fun for them if it works!  Next time I will follow the forums' advice and test it myself!

You know, it took us quite awhile yesterday to get this to work when we were testing it.  Roger also told me that he added a little bit more glycerin to the pool yesterday.

One thing is to make sure you lift it up QUICKLY.  While going slow might be what you would expect, it actually doesn't work at all.

And removing that top layer of the pool also really helped.  For anyone doing this, I'd definitely plan to practice a day or so ahead so you can know how it is supposed to work.

For those of you doing the glycerin solution...

When you made it overnight, did you put the solution into the water containers to store for use once it was mixed or did you leave in the pools?  Our games are outdoors and I don't want any critters to be swimming during the night.   The pools would be too difficult to move.

Where are you purchasing glycerin?

Thanks!

I mixed ours a week ahead in 10 gallon buckets from Tractor Supply.  I figure we'll use them over and over and even store games supplies in there!  We didn't pour the stuff in until Sunday afternoon because we wanted to make sure things worked.

But we did use a plastic drop cloth like a giant sheet of Glad wrap and covered the pool overnight so nothing got in and things didn't evaporate!

I purchased my glycerin (about $3.50) at Hobby Lobby in the soap making section.  Someone else told me that Walmart's craft section has it as well.
