This idea really excites me.  There are several people in the church who will not be able to help with VBS for one reason or another, including 1 older gentleman who was saved in VBS many years ago, and made a very significant financial donation to our VBS.  He tells me in tears that he wishes he could do more.  I have decided to divide our time up into 15 minute slots, and ask for "staff" to commit to pray during times while our program is going on!  This "Power Lab" Power Plant will be the "Power" behind what we do, and I believe that we will run a much more effective program with the power of pray going on as we do our program!  I am even thinking about somehow recognizing them as "PL PowerPlant Staff."  Also that they are just as important as the working staff, though I believe that they will even be more important!

Our pastor is hitting us hard on prayer right now, and I believe that this will complement what he has been encouraging us toward!

Let me know of any other suggestions along this manor.

Bill Edwards

Awesome Idea and I hope you don't mind if I copy the name!   Last year I wanted to set up a prayer team to send requests to but it never really got going.   I had so much else to do this important step got neglected.    This year I asked one of "prayer warriors" if she would lead it.   Here's what I sent her for the plan
  • Prayer team leader would get others who would agree to pray
  • Each week the Prayer team leader would call or email me to get a list of requests.   I need that someone asking (nagging?) me so I follow through.
  • Prayer requests would vary from practical matters like getting leaders, finding someone to donate a specific item, materials arriving on time, etc. to spiritual matters like praying Kids will accept Christ, Leaders will be impacted, etc.
  • Requests early on would be weekly unless an urgent need arises, probably daily the week of Bible school and maybe the week before.
  • Requests could be distributed primarily by email.   Some could be distributed in written form at church for those without email or occasionally via phone.
  • Adult Sunday school cl would be asked soon to begin praying for a specific request each week.   Children's cl and children's church would be asked to pray in the last few weeks leading up to VBS.

I then had the church office send an email I composed to everyone with email in the church inviting them to be a part of it.   This all happenned this week and I know she got 7 sign-ups the first day!!!I too was thinking of some of those people who support the children but are not physically able to help anymore.

Rap-

Don't mind you using the name at all.  Your ideas are great also!  Just a little too organized for where I am right now   (you wouldn't want to come and set the same thing up for me?)

My prayer life is not what it should be, and I am being challenged by my pastor in that way.  It's just that I've seen some incredible results when God's people pray like we should!

I'm not that organized either which is why it didn't happen last year.   That's why I put someone else in charge and they can bug me to actually remember to get the prayer requests to them.   I'm right with you!

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE PRAYER IDEA.  DON'T KNOW WHY IT HADN'T OCCURRED TO ME SOONER.  WE HAVE A BIBLE CLUB DURING THE YEAR AND HAVE IN THE PAST TAKEN PICTURES OF THE KIDS AND PUT THEM ON THE BULLETIN BOARD WITH THEIR NAMES SO PEOPLE CAN GET SPECIFIC WITH THEIR PRAYERS.

I love the name - Power Lab Power Plant!
Our church uses a card insert in our Sunday bulletin to have people sign up for things - whether it's the Wednesday night dinner, a class, a special event, etc. We also use that to have people sign up to be prayer partners for things such as our VBS, mission trips, youth trips, etc. This is done from the office, so I'm not even sure how people are contacted after the fact - whether it's by email or postcard, but I was thinking it was by postcard. I just know that we currently have a ministry student who needed to follow a major project for school & one of the things she has been put in charge of is organizing the prayer partners for our VBS this summer. I did receive an email from her as part of leadership to let us know that we were the focus of the prayer partners in a particular week. Always nice to know! (And needed!)
