hey all. now that i can finally post on the forum, i realize how discouraged i am. i've done VBS for a lot of years and this year there seems to be no end of frustrations. e.g. 1)markers not working on wacky hacky makes me question wisdom of doing soccer ball outreach. was this idea really field tested? if yes, what markers worked? 2)t shirt transfers. what is the trick to get them to work properly? 3) gotcha guy. what is the trick to get them to work properly? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

It does get over whelming sometimes but thats why we are all here to help one another. So I don't know about the hacky sacks we did not choose to do it. The transfers have to cool completely before you take the backing off. The guys in the bottle You have to do it exactly as the directions say. It may take some practice.

May God lift your spirits and bless your VBS program.

Stay encouraged! I did the transfers myself and I had no problem at all and this was the first time I ever used them. However I did have another lady do it first and she gave it back to me because she was fustrated with it. Make sure to use a iron with no steam and let them cool completely. Make sure you also peel the backing off in a angle or they will tear at points. Keep your head up and if it is too much remember to delagate the job to someone you know will do a good job. As far as the hacky I can not help there we did not choose to do them. However I would look into the fabric markers, and or paint. Many times if you take your item into the store someone in the crafts stores are usually really helpful. Best Wishes!

Sharpie permanent markers are what we are using.  Haven't done it with the kids yet but just doing the sample with an adult was very messy!  It works but I don't know about with the younger kids.  Regular markers will not work because it rubs off.

Someone on another thread suggested Crayola fabric markers so I bought them since the Sharpies were a mess in our trial. They did rather well. The colors weren't as bright and there was a little residue but it dabbed off on a tissue when I used that. May retry the Sharpies by drying them in the same way and see if that helps the Sharpies do better.

When using the iron-on transfers, remember not to use steam in the iron.  Also, be sure that the shirt is completely cooled off when removing the backing.  Then, hopefully you should have no problem.

I to have had problems with Gotcha Guy and have decided we're not going to use them (even though I've already received them).  For the wacky hackies, my craft leader did a test with sharpies and after coloring a small section, he blew on it for just a couple of seconds.  That seemed to do the trick.  He thought he might have them color a section, then put it down while he discussed the meaning of the color, then color next section and so on.

Whatever you do, don't get discouraged with the crafts.  Each year, I look at the crafts in my starter kit (I always purchase the starter kit first so I can decide what I want to use).  Sometimes I use their crafts, other times I do my own.  But overall, I think the Group curriculum is great!

For Gotcha Guy you have to have the water bottle completely full. The blue one needs a little water in the head to sink, I just used a medicine dropper. Then you have to squeeze the bottle and hold it, not squeeze it over and over again. We haven't had our VBS yet but I let my daughter make the samples for me and she said that is her favorite one. Most of the time the crafts get forgotten quickly, I don't think this one will.

Re: Tshirt transfers -
I follow the directions on the transfer papers about how hot to make the iron, but disregard the directions about how long to keep the iron on it. Like others have said, make sure that your iron is not steaming. Then I usually place the transfer where I want it to be, then starting with the iron on the left side of the transfer, lay the iron on and count to 10, move the iron over a bit (loosely speaking, to the edge of where I'd just finished pressing), count to 10, move it over a bit, count to 10, move it.... you get the picture. I do that until I've gone over the entire transfer, and sometimes I'll go back again over an edge or a small detail part that I think I might have missed or might peel up with the paper if it's not stuck on REALLY well. Then I let it cool completely before trying to peel up the paper.

I have often done all 140 of our shirts in one sitting this way - just rented a movie or two, and whipped through all of them while entertaining myself with a new movie I haven't seen yet
