hi there, I was just wondering if anyone was doing the styrofoam stuff like on the decorating DVD. We are trying to but I can't seem to find any big sheets of the white styrofoam. The only thing that lowes carried was blue and pink foam insulation... which just doesn't cut the same. Any ideas on where I can find this stuff? Thanks!

Hi

We always use the white styrofoam.  It is easy to handle and cut.  Not too expensive and if you don't paint the back side you can use that side the next year.  It takes color very well--tempora or latex paint.

I recommend the 1 1/2" but the 1" is much cheaper.

We buy it at either Home Depot or Menards.

I buy it at Lowes. I have used the 1" and the 2". I love the 2" for rigidity. I get white only at my Lowes. Home Depot near me carries the pink and blue.

There is a furniture warehouse in my town that provides the styrofoam pieces that are used to protect the furniture in shipping.  I call ahead when I want them to begin saving pieces for me and then I go pick them up.  In the past years, they have graciously provided enough styrofoam that we have not had to purchase any.  Maybe there is a place near you that could help you out.

I am also looking for the thicker styrofoam pieces as shown in the Decorating Places DVD and called the Lowe's near me and they only have the 1/2 inch foam boards, but I was looking for the 1 or 2 inch thick pieces.  Is there a specific name of the type of foam board?  A certain company?  I don't think I want to work with the thinner boards with paper on them (like what you can get at Michael's), so any guidance would be appreciated!  Amber

We all use different material... I'm still a big fan of the blue, pink or green extruded foam.

Cutting w/the dollar store utility knife where you can extend the blade, the dollar store "bread" knife. Electric saws Radial arm, table saw, band saw, hand saw and jig saw all work just fine. The fine tooth blades cut smoother.

The white "beaded stuff" does not hold shape to me. I know some have made hot wire cutters and made very nice pieces... if it works for you go for it... who's going to tell you that's wrong.

I have very blessed w/ free foam from a friend who saves it from going to the dump. For the lab bench on my Hometown page I did buy a sheet at Lowes for a discount because the corner was broke... just ask you will be suprised how God provides.

look in the yellow pages under "styrofoam" or "foam."  I found a place in Houston that will cut it any thickness and size you need.

Lowes can order it for you.

We used the blue 1 in foam from Lowes and cut it with a $15 hot knife from Michaels. It worked great! We have traced, cut out, and painted everything! Now all is left is to assemble it!

We live in the Houston Area and looked in the yellow pages under foam insulation.  We found a manufacturer called "Houston Foam" and they sell the foam in 4' x 8' sheets (same size as plywood) and we can order any thickness.  This year we're getting the 2" thick as called for in the decorating places DVD and adding some 1 1/2" to make foam gears and more flasks and beakers for some of our other stations.  Does anyone know what the heater filters listed on the materials list are for?
