I just wanted to share with you an alternate idea!  After watching the Decorating video, I was having nightmares with beakers, maybe some of you can relate.  Therefore, we came up with a much simpler and inexpensive idea that at the end turned out really nice!  Here we go:

You're going to need the Clip Art, Decorating CD, a printer and a laminating machine - you can get one for about $60.00 (or just go to staples).

Go to excel and open a document, then insert one picture of the beakers and then adjust the size to how big you want it even if it goes to more than one page as you can tape them together afterwards.  Then proceed to printing.  After you're done printing all your beakers/test tubes/word phrases etc.,  you can cut them out before laminating so that you can arrange your pieces and use up all the space when using your laminating pouches.  After laminating them, just cut out each piece and tape together any that were bigger than one page.  Depending on how many images you're doing, it shouldn't really take you more than 2 hours to be all finished!!!

The beakers look so real because they even have bubbles coming out and the colors look really good too.

We covered the back wall with paper (yellow).  Then we made little shelves out of 1" styrofoam 36" x 6" and painted them light brown.  We then used silicone caulk to glue them to the paper on the background - they look like real shelves!!

We then taped popsicle sticks to the back of the beakers to give firmness to them.  We also left about 3/4" of the popsicle stick at the bottom so that we could insert them on the styrofoam shelves.  The beakers look 3D and like glass because they shine.

We put stripes of aluminum foil in the middle.

I'll try to post some pictures!!!

Hope this idea helps somebody out there!!!

That is an awesome idea!!!  We are planning on making our version of the back drop BUT if for some reason that doesn't work I'll be borrowing your idea...I can't wait to see pictures!!!

You can purchase a cold laminator at Wal Mart or a craft store in the scrapbooking dept.

I assume you mean that you printed them in color, then cut and laminated?  Do you have a ball park figure for cost? I am thinking (1) a color cartridge for the printer, (2) a laminating machine and refills.

Depending on how many beakers, maybe you'll end up using 1 color ink cartridge. I have a laser printer, so it wasn't that bad!  We got our laminating machine at Costco Business (about $60.00) and the laminating pouches are  100 for $20.00.  Overall it's worth it!!

I didn't buy the clip art cd, so I just used the free flask clip art.  I didn't make very big flasks, 3 per page.  The middle of the free flask is empty, I just printed them on neon colored card stock.  I did have to take a sharpie and trace/fill in the outline.

I'm going to stand them up on a brightly colored bookshelf from my Sunday School room.  And fill in with test tubes made from soda bottles.

As far as the laminator goes, I bought one at Costco a few weeks ago for $25.  It came with lots of pouches too!

Here in cornfields of the hooiser state, we use clear contact paper for the laminator.

Some churches has taken theirs to Kinkos.

Well, out here in the potato fields of Idaho, I've used clear contact paper for 20 some odd years.  This little laminator is pretty slick !!!  You'd really have to twist my arm to go back to the old way!

Great Ideas! My group is also from Idaho.

We are decorating practically the entire church with painted card board....from a picture out of the inside of one of the folders from the kit. They have card board beakers with sticks and balloons on them to look like bubbles. We didn't really think that looked real enough. Plus our little darlings would pop all the balloons on day one. So we are doing the card board beakers and tubes and then getting the BIG rolls of construction paper from a preschool and cutting the biggest circles we can get...in three different sizes and taping them to the wall....that way they can go really high....be really colorful...and cover a BIG area quickly.

Our VBS is in 3 weeks I will post pics then.

I have a laminator (we have a big one at church too) but mine takes cartridges, not pouches. You just insert the stuff and turn the crank.

I agree - clear contact paper is ONLY for large stuff that I cannot run through the big laminator.

in our area Mardel and Lakeshore Learning offer laminating for 25 cents per foot, so that is an alternative if you don't have a machine.

Color cartridges for our laser are around $60.
