Hi Heather - from another Heather!!
My heart goes out to you, because I SO remember being in your place my first year doing Group's VBS. I vividly remember being all alone, sweating, crying (and yes, even swearing a bit I'm sorry to say), setting up the Bible storytelling room, up and down a ladder to hang black landscaping plastic from ceiling to floor around the whole room. The format was so different from what we had done before, and I was SO tired and out of energy. I did have a vision of what it could be though, and I trusted that if we could just live through a day or two of it, God would bring that vision to life in other people's hearts too. And it happened! VBS was awesome that year and though we continue to tweak it to make it work just right for us (the basic format works wonderfully for us, but we tweak the details here and there), my church will never go to a different VBS.

I'm so sorry you're regretting choosing PowerLab, and I hope things get easier soon!! *sending many hugs*

And ditto on what others have said about only opening what supplies you'll need for the group of kids you have. Everything's returnable if it's not open!

*~Heather~* (6/14/2008)
I am all of the above...confused, tired and out of energy. This is my first year as director and my first year of using Group's VBS. I have to say it is different then the other publisher's we have used (I was involved as a VBS volunteer for 12 yrs, before becoming an employee) and I can't get what a feel is a definate grasp on it. I have had to modify it so much to work for us and that is just making more work. To be honest...I regret making the choice to do Power Lab. I let others sway me to do it when I had already settled on another.

Our VBS is in a week and I still don't even have all my volunteers. I have a very lownumber of kids registered and will have a lot of supplies left over which equals wasted church money.

Sorry this turned into a whiney vent, but you did ask

GLOWORM DIRECTOR (6/16/2008)
I am also a first time VBS director. Our VBS is July 21-25th and I have been trying to plan and organize all of this since Jan., when I found out that I was going to do this. This year I am doing a lot of first time stuff, but enjoying all of it. I am nervous about VBS, mainly because I don't know what I am doing. I do know God has opened up so many doors for this VBS and I am so excited. But any help or advice on getting decorations up, and organizing would be appreciated. I am worried that it will not come together like its suppose to. Please keep us in your prayers.

Hey Stacy in Northport.  I am in North Birmingham.  I wish I would have met you sooner and I would have been glad to have you stop by for a night of our Power Lab too see what was going on.

As for tips...make sure you have a team of people to help with the decorating other wise you will wear yourself out.  ORganizing?  HMmm...the key to life it seems.  I do lack some in that department in my house right now, but for VBS felt I did pretty well.  I got one of those crates that you hang file folders from at Walmart.  That helped me tremendously to be able to file papers and I had plenty of space left over to just put things that people handed me or that I needed to make sure I had, like my Sing and Play manual, FFF manuals and directors manual of course!  Being on top of updates is helpful too.  Also just making sure you have good reliable people for your stations will go a long way in releaving your stress levels. Knowing that your station leaders can handle things when you give them their book and supplies if you need to, is a great stress relief.

Communictation with your workers I think is key to a successful VBS.  If you send out updates, talk with your people, let them know you are available...that goes a long way in them being able to overlook gliches and helps them to be more flexible too.

You'll do great!!! It's a lot of tiring fun, but so worth it.  Email me if you havn't yet received the daily take home sheets as well!

Wow - I have a ton of questions, but I think the one most pressing on my mind right now is the closing production skit.  Did you use it and if so, how much time did it take?

We are doing our VBS at night from 6:00-8:30 pm.  We are doing crafts two nights and games two nights.  The last night we are cutting out that rotation and adding the time to our Faith Fusion Finale in hopes of having more time for a final night celebration.  Because we aren't doing crafts every night and that's when the elementary kids hear about OK2K, we are adding that to Faith Fusion Finale each night.  I feel there should be enough time for this because we aren't doing Spotlight Drama.  The big unknown though is whether or not we'll have time on the last night to add the closing production skit as well.  It looks like it would be really fun, but I hate to keep people past out 8:30 ending time.  I believe we'll have close to an hour on that last night, but we need to do the regular Faith Fusion Finale stuff before doing the closing skit.

Thoughts?

Reeny, I have not used the closing production skit...but I did add my own stuff in to suit our needs.  Our closing lasted about 45 minutes, so you should be OK.  Also, on the last night I don't think anyone will object to ending a little late.  Ecspecially since you are ending at 8:30.  We end at 9:00 and still went over on the last night. I think people just expect that.  We did all the nights of spotlight drama on the last night so parents could see it and did lots of song and a little skit with Professor Wilma.  We crammed a lot in.

I don't know what your plan is as far as giving out certificates, but if you can skip that it will help tremendously on your time.  We had goodie bags with the certificates made up and had them in the pew for the crew leaders to hand out at the appropriate time.  You will save a lot of time there if you are worried about the time.

I'd be glad to answer any other questions.  You'll do great!  Power Lab is a fun VBS and one that everyone will really get into!

If you do a search for the cornstarch mixture you will see a few threads on the subject.
We are going to mix it the night before.

I don't think it really matters too much.  The night before or the day of would be fine.  Just have towels

This might be answered in the Bible Blast materials, but I already handed those out to our station leaders.  Anyway - if I mix up the cornstarch stuff the night before, do I need to cover it overnight?  I'm afraid it would dry out.  Also - if I make a batch of this with the "recipe" provided - is that only enough for a specific number of kids, or will that be used for my entire night?

Thanks for any help!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!! Did you use Spotlight Drama?  How did it go? Did you project the slide show?  Any tech difficulties?  Thanks again!

I think the recipe provided will fill the tub that you are supposed to use and will work for an indefinite number of kids.  And yes, I would cover it over night and then stir again when your ready to use.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!! Did you use Spotlight Drama?  How did it go? Did you project the slide show?  Any tech difficulties?  Thanks again!

We did do spotlight drama, but we did it all on the last night.  This was for 2 reasons...

1- it gave the ladies doing the pictures more time to get the shots they needed and to edit them fully.

2- it gave the parents an oppurtunity to see a full weeks overview on the last night.

We did project it onto our screen as a Power point presentation, and did not have any technical problems.

The key to a succesful Spotlight Drama in my opinion is having 2 people working on it.  You need one to take the pictures and one to get the kids posed up as they need to be.  This helps it run quickly and smoothly and the kids don't have to miss out on much while they are doing it.  Plus if it is running smoothly the kids are having a great time while they are posing.

Hope it works out for you.  As a director, I really enjoyed seeing the finished product at the end of the week.
