Hi Heather, we are a Catholic Church doing Group VBS for the 12th year.  My church only knows Group, however, so I don't have to deal with "the way we always did it" issue.  That, in fact, may be your biggest problem and is very difficult to overcome.

Our VBS program is not intended to replace or replicate either Mass or Religious Education.  It's simply meant to be a fun week for the children at church during the summer learning about their God.  The Harcourt Religion materials have an imprimatur on all components, so it is in line with Catholic teaching.  We don't rewrite anything.

To your specifics:  1) we collect school supplies for a local service project and do not use CRS component, 2) At our church, the Chadder rotation always runs out of time, so I personally would not bother with replacing the content that goes with the Buddies if you are not using them, 3) right there with you on the People of Faith cards at snack time!  We did move this to Crafts, but I will simply photocopy the People of Faith section from the Test Tube Treats manual and give it to the Crafts people - no original writing on my part.

I, too, am sorry that this has been so stressful for you and hope this helps a little.  I sometimes think that my experience as director may be more rewarding than that of the childrens'.  And don't forget that the children may not even notice a situation that you perceived as a disaster!  I will keep you in my prayers.

Hello, I am new to the forum and to teaching at a VBS program. We are doing Power Lab and we begin on Monday evening. I have never done VBS, so I am very nervous. I am a early childhood teacher for the past twelve years, so workiong with children is not new to me, just doing it in a religious way is. Some of the church members have been very helpful, but the problem is now that, I can't find the items I had in mind for decorations (twirly things that you hang from the ceiling), the Dollar Store in my area did not have them. I do have some other things if I can;t find them. My main concern is having an activity to do with the children every night for about half an hour until we move to the different stations. I didn't really know what to expect when I agreed to help out. I do have an activity for the first night but am now at a loss for the remaining four nights. I was told that the activity should be around the daily bible points. I am teaching the preschool group and it is a small group. If anyone has any activity that they did successfully with this age group (3-5 years) I would much appreciate your input. Time is running out for me and I am feeling panicky. Thanks so much for any info

Our church includes the preschoolers in all of the rotations except for the Bible lesson, which sounds like possibly the way your church will be doing things.  We use the Bible lesson from the preschool book.  Check with your director to see if she has the manual for you.  Everything is scripted out for you and it includes how long it takes so you'll know exactly what you have time for.  We usually do the welcome and the Bible story and then it's time to join the other rotations.

I'm heading to the decorations thread to post some simple spiral twirly directions.  They're easy to make and will add instant color.

Is it that a decision has been made to keep the preschoolers out of Sonic Sing & Play? We include everyone (well, 3's & up) in Sing & Play, but it seems to me that we did discuss before if it was too much for them or not, so I do understand the concern. If that is the case, obviously the decision has already been made not to have them w/ the larger group, but perhaps you could get a copy of the Sing & Play manual & use that as a guideline. Will the preschoolers be signed in to you? You could have coloring sheets of the buddies or the Bible story of the day ready for them to begin on when they arrive to keep them occupied & have the music playing. Kids usually love to share, so if you're at a loss, I'd certainly take advantage of that! They can share what they are thankful for, a time when they helped someone, a time when they needed to be brave, etc. Hope this helps!!

Missy,

I don't have the reactor paper, and would really like an opinion about this as an alternative.

Red cabbage juice is an indicator (like the paper), vinegar is an acid, and the baking powder is a base.  I'm not sure about the baking soda.

The directions say: Put 1/4 cup purple cabbage juice in a clear glass.  Add an equal amount of white vinegar, turns pinkish-red.  Sprinkle in 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, turns bluish-green.  Sprinkle in 1/4 teaspoon baking powder, purplish color returns.

We do a community VBS with several churches.  We still don't have our leader's guides, since nobody ordered them until June 18.  Our VBS starts on July 7...  Thankfully, I have a Director's Manual, which I bought myself in March.

Anyway, I would REALLY appreciate anybody's opinion, about would this demonstrate basically the same thing as the reactor paper.

thanks, Stacey

I have a pretty simple question.

Maybe I'm just over thinking, but what is so cool about the Hex nut and balloon experiment used for Chadder's Day 1? The leader guide even says that this is a "wow" moment. Is it because its a loud sound or something cooler?

Hello!  We finished VBS yesterday with our VBS Service!  It was a great outreach to get families who normally don't attend our church, or church in general, to come and see what their children did all week at Power Lab.  The kids enjoyed getting to come up front and sing and do the motions to the songs.

We started the service with two of the Spotlight Drama's from the week(which by the way Group, was fantastic!!  The kids loved that each night, keep them coming).  We sang three songs, reviewed the lessons learned each night, let the congregation sing "There's Power in the Blood" and "Amazing Grace".  I talked about the Operation Kid-to-Kid balls and the Daily Challenges.  We watched a 10 minute video of our week and then did the "Come to Jesus" skit from night 4.  Our Pastor then preached on "The Power of God" with a heavy emphasis on the plan of salvation.

It was an awesome service!  Our Senior Adult Pastor told me afterwards what a great idea this was.  Can't wait till next year!!

Greetings everyone!  Sorry if I have not answered your questions.  I have been out of the loop up in the Mountains doing VBS again for the Indian kids.  It was a great and tiring week and I will now try to catch up on answering questions and mailing things that people have requested.  Bear with me...I have a date with the hubby tonight (he had to stay behind and work) and then tomorrow I can do emails and such.

Hope everyones VBS planning is moving along well.  I am happy and sad to be done with both of mine!

I have what may be a silly question... what is distilled water, where can I find it, and is it truly required for making the bubble stuff for the giant bubble game on Day 1? Can I use regular tap water instead?

Thanks!!

Hope date night with your hubby was great Missy
