| I bought my distilled water in gallon jugs at Walmart. It says "Distilled water" on it. It's water that has the impurities removed through distillation (boiled and then condensed).

I used room temperture soda.
I know that when we did the sink or float on day 3 the water was not at room temp and the bowling ball sunk. At home that same bowling ball was floating two inches from the bottom. We had forgotten to fill the plastic tub before we started that night and so the water was much cooler.

| I'd love more scientific explanation re: why certain things float while others sink (in addition to those noted in the manual). For example, why does my lemon float but my lime sink? Why does a peeled orange sink but an unpeeled one float. Can you tell I was a horrible Science student? I'd appreciate any explanations or weblinks that might give more info. Also, did you explain to the kids why things floated or sank?

| ok, I just had a sciece lesson from my grandson. It is based on the Archimedes principle. If an item is denser than water it will sink.
Also it also has to do with pressure. The deeper an item goes in water there is more pressure being put on it to go up. But if gravity pushing down is stronger than pressure pushing up it will sink.
Orange to unpeeled orange: In the unpeeled orange there are air pockets under the rind so it floats. A peeled orange would make it the same as water so it sinks.
Hope this helps. I did not try to explain this to the kids. They just had fun guessing.
