| | When our church did our first VBS, we were small. We did it the 5 tuesdays in July and it worked out great. Now that we have grown we do it still in July but in the evening from 6:00 pm to 9 pm. It has worked out great. We also feed our workers during the evening. We always have to adults per crew so that one can leave and go eat at our buffet that we have set up and one can stay with the kids. A lot of the people who can't work our VBS for whatever reason are happy to donate food to feed the workers. It has worked out great and makes it easier for the adults to help out not having to worry about trying to eat before coming after work. I have awesome people who organize this for VBS week. Also for craft items, games or the food items for the snack station, we also put those needs on post its and create a poster board or use the item such as this year's Fiz and put our needs out there and people take the post it of the items they can donate and bring back to church. These things help so much with our budget. People do like to help even in small ways. Some of our elderly are able to help this way and they feel like they have contributed to helping our VBS, which they have greatly! Maybe you can try some of these ideas and I hope they can help you. |

| | Take a deep breath, pray, make a decision and then go with it. The once a week is a very cool idea. I really wish that all Religious Education was done VBS style. The kids remember so much of it! The only words of wisdom that I can offer are: part of the fun of VBS is the immersion. Will you still be able to create the environment, immerse the participants and the leaders? My previous experience was with a very large church. The last several years, I have been running a VBS at a small church. I needed to make a switch from mostly adult leaders to mentoring junior high and high school students to be the leaders. This year I have a student director and VBS is going fabulously. I have a 2 to 1 ratio of children to adolescent leaders. Everyone is learning! It is great in so many ways. It can be planned and done well in a month's time. God's Peace. |

| Coming from a church w/ a fairly large VBS (250+ kids), I think there are definite advantages to a smaller group - less volunteers needed & you really get to know those kids. We are doing a once a week program this year because construction on our campus led us to the decision that we would be better off canceling VBS. We thought maybe we could use some of the material over the summer in Children's Church or SS & from that, long story short, we are providing the full program over 10 Sundays in the summer during our Children's Church hour & the final Sunday of the summer will be our VBS Sunday. We are alternating Sundays w/ Sing & Play, Bible Blast & Games on one Sunday & Chadder, Crafts & Finale on the other. We have finished Day 1 - 2 Sundays so far - & it's gone very well. It's very different for us - we're used to having most of the kids preregistered & in crews but because of the nature of children's church, we didn't put them in crews, but instead have tried to assign volunteers different Sundays. It's been working out, even though it certainly looked crazy to me the first Sunday! We had 60 some elementary aged children & about 15 preschoolers. I believe we had slightly less this last Sunday.
You know your church & what would work best - day, night, weeklong, once a week - & those who've posted before me have given wonderful advice. For whatever reason, often people are slow to volunteer - I guess it's that "maybe someone else will do it" mentality, but if you personally ask people ("You know, I've noticed that you are so creative & you're so good w/ kids, I think you'd be great doing crafts!") they'll often say yes. Some people are afraid of what they're taking on & if this is a new program for your church, it's a big unknown - give them this website so that they can see the support that is out here! It sounds like God has put the right person in charge of it at your church - you!
I hope you'll update us as you're able because I look forward to hearing how it's going. You've got time, you've got us, & most importantly, you've got God!

| | Our church is also a very small church and we had to decide to cancel or have Vbs this year as well. With fewer workers and all our VBS will go on. My advice to you is to get started. Remember that God is the only one who can work in the hearts of man. Therefore the people who are willing to help are the ones that God has prepared for you. Also remember that God will not put anything before you that He can not get you through. Trust in Him and His Guidance. I also would suggest that you take control over VBS. You direct!! Meet with all the people who are willing to help and then assign them tasks. For example Sue wants to help then make her in charge of the snacks. Give someone the job of teaching the Cinema Science station. You don't have to do everything just lead and direct. LEARN TO ASSIGN TASK to those people you know are capable. With someone to diect I think alot of the other stuff will fall into place. Remember to many cooks in the kitchen ruins the soup. That sounds like the problem. Sounds like everyone wants to help but they don't know what to do to help. Best Wishes!

| Please don't give up! I am not on a planning committee this year but when I am I always stress until the first day. What happens the first day always reminds of how God is at work because things fall into place. Having large numbers of kids is great but it is just as important to give the small number of children you do have an awesome learning experience. They are the future. There are lots of ways to divide up the responsibility. Last year we had 5 different dads that each took a day doing games and a mom that shopped for all the supplies needed for the games. For other stations, just one person did the whole thing. I wish you well.

| My only question is "Has God it on your heart to do VBS?" If not, and you do it anyway, it could be disaster. If God has, then press on Though not ideal, it can be done. Just simplify. Do things on a smaller scale. Most importantly, have fun. |

| | Oh my goodness, when I read this post, I thought it was someone from my church! The exact same thing happened to us, only it happened with TWO WEEKS to go. We too average around 70 on a Sunday morning. We do a Wednesday night kid's bus ministry averaging 30 kids and most of those kids and their families are not there on Sunday morning. We have no idea how many children to expect for VBS, but cancelling was simply not an option for us because of those unchurched kids. I was already on the leadership team (Sonic Sing & Play director) and when the ball was dropped at our church (with almost no planning done and 2 weeks until kickoff), it fell in the lap of our pastor's wife, who asked me to share the load since I only work part-time (so of course I must have all this extra time to devote to this, right?) . The 2 of us tend to be very organized, but this has been extremely stressful. I've been logging the hours spent on this just out of curiosity, and in the past 10 days I've put in over 40 hours. BUT IT CAN BE DONE. A month's planning time seems heavenly compared to what we went through. We begin our VBS Sunday night and I dread this weekend. Our chuch is so small and the people so busy (eevn our pastor is bi-vocational) that not only am I the Sonic Sing & Play (and co-director) but we've had to basically plan every detail of the Bible Blast because that station leader will be there each night but has no extra time to plan beforehand. And did I mention we'll do most of the decorating? I'm exhausted and my husband is threatening to change the locks because he doesn't believe I live here anymore! The biggest help was that we had already made arrangements from a large church in the area who is doing Power Lab to inherit ALL of their decorations. That was a huge help. If you are anywhere near us (East Tennessee) , you're welcome to them too. Look elsewhere on this forum to see who's closest to you to see if that's a possibility. The director's manual covers pretty much everything you'll need to know, and we had copies of the station leader's guides also so we took care of the supplies needed, etc. The other thing I need to stress is that you'll have to take the material and tell yourself up front that you can't do everything. There are tons of really neat details that add up to what Power Lab is, but you'll have to make it fit and work for your church. Make the snacks beforehand. Show Cinema Science during treat time. Don't worry about adding the dry ice experiments during Finale if that seems overwhelming (as it did to me). Yes, if you do it exactly as written it's really impressive. But the curriculum is sound and there are still a lot of near things that are done, and even if you take the skeleton of it and only do that, it's still probably going to be lifechanging for the children. I know I'm alternately negative and then encouraging, but I'm trying to be realistic. Again, it CAN BE DONE, but it will mean a lot of time on your part and a lot of stress to you and your family. Only you can prayerfully decide where to go from here. Feel free to e-mail me directly if there's anything else I can add or answer. God bless! Wendy in Maryville, TN |

| | THANKS TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!!! YOU HAVE HELPED ME IN A HUGE WAY!!!! I am so happy to say, I met with 2 other women who were "in charge" of VBS, and we have come to a decision! I had prayed a great deal about this, and after reading all the posts to my plea for help, it seemed that God was telling me that although this VBS was designed a certain way, and it works very well in that way it was designed for, He is the God of ultimate creativity, and He cannot be put into a box! He wanted me to search out the best "fit" for my church....fit it to what our kids need, and He would take care of the rest. So, I was a bit apprehensive to tell all this at the meeting, because one of the people has had some difficulty with being flexible in the past. There was some rigidity at first, but then after I told them about all of your comments, and what I felt God was saying through it all, it was as if they had the "AH-HA!" moment....and from then on we just brainstormed! So we decided on a once-a-week gathering, and start with just our kids. Hopefully in time they will bring in their friends. We will use the Power Lab materials, and once we have finished that, we will go right into a different curriculum....we will make this an on-going group. Currently, our kids do not have anything outside of what they are offered during Sunday service. One of you had asked if God had laid it upon my heart to do VBS.....that was so right on!!!! The answer is NO! He did not! I felt I HAD to do it, because I was asked to help, and because our kids desperately need SOMEthing! He did seem to "close the door" also, to the one-week idea, since the people I personally approached to help said "no". And there were very few people to ask in the first place. But this new idea we have, I DO feel God wants me to help with. We would also like to incorporate a more serious aspect to our kids' group, one that deals with the issues these kids have to face at school.....most of them are in public schools. I feel God is telling me that He wants to do a renovation from the "ground up" , so to speak, in my church. If you knew us, you would understand! I feel so re-vitalized and excited! Thank you all, once again, it was as if you were all literally with me at that meeting, God behind us all! This will help me to ALWAYS seek His answer first, not do things according to what I think should be done. I pray God will bless all of you BIG time.... Lisa from Indiana |
