I was sitting here reading about how people are stressed about decorating and was thinking about "big", "cheap", and "colourful"... Our church is tiny and rural - meaning small budget... when we did ST, we filled the whole back wall of our platform with a sun - made from strips of plastic (dollar store) tablecloths.

This literally cost us $3 (red, orange, yellow tablecloths) - and we used thumb tacks to stick it up - white part left in centre since that's where our projector displays...

so for powerlabe I though, use really bright colourful tablesloths (easy to cut - and super lightweight to hang) and cut enormous beaker/flask/test tube shapes out of them - like the full size of the tablecloth - a few would make an enormous impact!!!

Just thinking..

We did similar last year for our long hallways.  A couple of purple tablecloths made great mountains down the hall.  Some white scrap paper for the snow-capped mountains and the hall was done.

We had trouble keeping the tablecloth from falling.  What type of tape would work best for plastic onto painted cinderblock?  Any ideas?

We buy the rolls of plastic table covering at Party City for about $15 and cover the walls with it (usually two different colors, one on top, and one on bottom) then add an accent on the hallways -- for example, you could use black and white and add cut-outs of gears this year...for Fiesta we used red and green and added cutouts of cactus, adobe buildings, etc.  Last year we did a non-Group VBS and used black on the walls and silver stars and planets.

duct tape works pretty well...althought some churches shy away because of the chance of taking paint off... clear packing tape sometimes works if you do it in flat strips (continuous - rather than little bits/ rolled up on the back)

If you have drywall painted walls in your church DO NOT use duct tape.  I speak from experience.  We have one of the largest duct tape mftr in our county (and they are very generous) and duct tape will take the paint and the paper surface of the drywall with it when you pull it off.  Seriously!

Others on the list have suggested staples.  They leave a much smaller hole than push pins and no residue to worry about.  Even clear celophane tape will leave residue.  Again, I know of which I speak...

yes.... if you have drywall - definitely NO duct tape!!!!

but for concrete block walls... especially in basements where humidity is a problem... it's really the only option we've found... unless you can suspend things from the ceiling along the walls...

paperclips work really well as ceiling hooks in drop ceilings and from light fixtures...

in the room we use for bible story, our pastor (who runs that station) permanantly installed heavy duty hooks on all four walls (one is cement block) at ceiling level (about 2 feet apart) he uses them every year to hang things down the walls and also to drape across the ceiling!

worked really well for the jericho wall coming down! just ran a rope through the hooks so when he let it go the canvas of the wall simply collapsed to the ground! wow! kids thought it was cool!

if it's permanant, people eventually don't see it... and because it's at ceiling level, it doesn't interfere with regular classroom function - and you may find many more uses for them besides VBS - can even hang banners, etc from them!

we've used duct tape on painted concrete walls with lots of success... it didn't take our paint off... probably becuase of the humidity... and any excess residue came off with a wipe of "goo gone".

As others have said, staples work really well on drywall... they're just a bit tedious to remove afterwards since you don't want them falling into carpeting, etc... so care is needed at tear down time - but they don't leave gaping holes.

For drywall, if the stuff you are hanging isn't too heavy, masking tape works well around here!

But we also use the staple idea with out any problems.

You can use poster putty, too.  Sometimes you have to be careful what color you choose, though.  Paperclips work well for the ceiling.

We have a lovely custodian who does alot of work for our church, and he's not really fond of us using tape on the walls, or nails.  So, something long range to consider is a cork strip to run down the halls so you have something to hang by.  This was our compromise and so far, everyone's happy!

Blue painters tape is my personal favorite.  I have not had it leave residue or tear drywall, but I have heard the cheaper brands might. I use 3M.  Also don't leave on really long term.
