I saw a butterfly garden online today - http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2327594&cp=&sr=1&f=Taxonomy%2FTRUS%2F2254197&origkw=butterfly+garden&kw=butterfly+garden&parentPage=search - and was thinking about using it for Sunday School.  We do the Workshop Rotation Model (we learn 1 Bible Story for 4 consecutive weeks, each week the kids are in a different "workshop.")  Anyway, I was thinking that the butterfly garden would be a neat object lesson for Easter or a Paul story, to demonstrate how God gives us new life, etc.

My question is - has anyone out there ever used one of these butterfly garden type things at church or home?  I was wondering how long it takes for the caterpillar to turn in to a butterfly and how the whole project worked for you (did it work as it was supposed to, etc.)?  I'm sure I learned this in school but am not sure now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!!

I found this idea in the back-issue archive of Children's Ministry Magazine...looks like it takes about seven weeks. This is an old idea, but I called the toll-free number and it still works!

A WHOLE NEW LIFE
Our teachers decided to help our children understand Easter's glorious message of new life through the metamorphosis of a butterfly. We bought a Butterfly Garden-a kit that contains five butterfly larvae, a butterfly house or "garden" with see-through sides, feeding materials, and complete instructions. Our children watched these small insects grow larger each week, spin a chrysalis, and eventually emerge as butterflies. The chrysalis state lasts several weeks so it seems as if the insect has "died," only to break out of its cocoon and emerge as a totally new life form.
We purchased our kit seven weeks prior to Easter so that the butterflies would emerge during Holy Week. It worked out perfectly! The children were delighted when they first saw the butterflies. On Easter Sunday, the children took the box to the front steps of the church and released the butterflies into the cool spring morning. Even some of our older church members came outside to watch the release. As those painted wings soared into the air on Easter morning, we reflected on how they were a living reminder of the promise of resurrection for Christians.
