Apparently heelies (the tennis shoes with wheels on the bottom that can be like roller skates or regular shoes) are the big thing right now because every where I go I see kids wearing them.  Recently at church I had one child wear his heelies to our Children's Ministry Nights (like Youth Group for kids age 3-5th grade.)  He was constantly putting the wheels out so he was skating across the floor.  The first time I saw him do it I told him that he could only wear them to church if he didn't use them as skates while he was inside the church.  The second time that evening that I saw him skating across the floor I told him if he did it again I was going to call his mom who was going to have to bring him different shoes to put on or take him home.

Has anyone else had this problem?  Do you let the children wear them to church?  I'm probably making it a bigger deal than it is because I haven't liked heelies since they first came out - they don't seem at all safe and I can't believe how expensive they are!  I would appreciate your thoughts.

I think Heelies are a big deal with kids today! And you'll see a lot more kids wearing them, I'm sure.

I think an issue you might want to consider is your bias toward Heelies. You say: "they don't seem at all safe and I can't believe how expensive they are!" You're definitely entitled to that opinion.

You just might want to factor your bias in when you're disciplining the young boy for wearing Heelies and skating. Is it genuinely a safety issue or is it because you don't think it's safe? Is it disruptive? Are people at risk? Or does it just bug you because you don't like them?

Once you know what's at the root of the Heelie challenge, you'll be able to deal with the Heelie issue. (I just bought Heelies for two of my children and while they would be incredibly unsafe for me...my kids are very adept at skating with them!)

I cringe when I see the kids inside a local Wal-Mart using them. I wonder how they will deal with it, if it becomes a problem. Kids at our church have worn them, too. I been thinking of bringing it up before our pastor--I'm sure he would make a wise decision.

They are trying to make Healies have a law the same as having skates on or riding a bike. That you need safety equitment on when using them .  Too many children have gotten hurt breaking arms , legs , Head injuries as well. So to have them not used in a church enviroment is a good thing. I would have a paper drawn up and have it sent home with each kid asking for sneakers only or dress shoes depending what you are doing to be worn at church.  Have you church name on the form that way if you have a guest they know where the paper came from .  I too agree with safety first

They are not allowed in public schools for safety reasons so I don't think it is a problem at all asking kids not to use them in church.  I personally would like to see them baned from malls I have been run into many times by children wearing them, even while their parents are standing right there next to them.

I would definaltely talk to the parents if its just one child or you could make it a policy for any church function.

Just some insite on the heelie situation. In our church ther was a growing amount of children

showing up to sunday school with them. We let them know that this was not the propper place for these things. As they continued to wear them, we then had a meeting with parents, not only about the safety issues but also about having respect for the House of God.

The house of the Lord is not a place for outdoor activities unless of course, there is a special program like VBS. We also took the oportunity to ban not only heelies, but also the use of video games by children, blackberries, and all cell phones must be put on Vibrate Mode during church hours. The congregation took it well and appreciated and supported our desition on the ban. Most of them were feeling the same way, just didn't dare to speak out.

Hope this helps some how.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts on the heelies issue - I really appreciate the help and it's nice to know that I'm not the only person who has experienced this problem.  I think that I'll talk with parents about this issue and let them know that church isn't the place to wear heelies.  I don't think most churches would let children wear roller skates around the church, so heelies aren't appropriate either.  Thanks again!  - Mandy

I didn't think Heelies would be an issue at our church since we have such a small group of kids and I had not seen any of them wear one until this Sunday, right in the middle of the sanctuary and with his parents sitting in the pews! I quickly glanced at his parents and told him that this was no place for "heeling". I did however, told him that I would get a pair and join him outside once the weather got warmer. He took it well. I do plan to get a pair!

...We also took the opportunity to ban not only heelies, but also the use of video games by children, blackberries, and all cell phones must be put on Vibrate Mode during church hours. Speaking of cell phones during service, I recently made a PPT slide that runs in a loop along with the announcements before service begins. Here is a snapshot of the slide.

Partnering with parents to "TRAIN" up our children in the way they should go!
