Hello to all the Girlfriends going to Peru!

We want to let you all start getting to know each other. As you start getting your info packets from us here at Group, introduce yourselves here--we want everyone to have a chance to get connected so we won't feel like strangers when we get on that boat.

Will be fun to get a chat started!

Hey!
I'm excited to be bringing a team of 12 women from Canada!
My husband and I pastor a church in Brampton, Ontario - we have been here 3 years. We have 5 children aged 8 to 20 - my oldest son will be attending Vanguard University in Costa Mesa this fall...my 18 year old daughter is coming to Peru with our team.

Hi:

What a great idea for us to get to know one another!  Too bad my computer at home just crashed; at least I can end my days at work taking time to chat with you.

I'm Jeanne, your Midwest connection.  I live in North Branch, Minnesota, which is about an hour north of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.  We have a cabin on the North Shore of MN which allows me to have some great weekends of hiking, golfing, reading and pontooning with my husband and two college kids - who are working up there this summer.

In 2006, I had the opportunity to travel to Tanzania for the high school graduation of a young Maasae girl I've sponsored.  Getting to know the heart and soul of this beautiful, young woman was amazing!  I'm so looking forward to experiencing the heart of the Peruvian women and children we're soon to meet!

"Cheers!' Jeanne

I think it is great that everyone has the opportunity to get to know each other and to kick around ideas and tips for travel.  I will not be on this trip but I have been down to Pucallpa many times and am very familiar with the boat and the ministry of that church.  I am happy to be a resource if anyone has any questions about anything. I know that it will be a great trip and lives will change.

One thing I would recommend to everyone is to remember that it will be muddy and that you should not bring any shoes or clothes that you would hate to see dirty. Open toe shoes for the boat are great but while in the village a good pair of hiking boots would be good. As if the airlines have not given us enough reason to pack light with the extra charges, living on a boat with 40 other women, it will be good to keep it simple.

Another thing that will be a great help is the purchase of travel insurance.  I recently have had several trips where my airline delayed the flight long enough to miss connections and I was stranded. Not all of these are covered by the airline, like weather delays. There are so many things that can happen to delay or cancel your trip at the last minute that you want to be covered for the air and land costs of the trip or you could be out a good chunk of change.

I look forward to chatting with you and I will be in prayer for your trip.

Greetings from the heart of the Big Sky Country!  I'm Suzanne, and I have to admit that I am a little apprehensive about this trip as I have never been outside the U.S. and I am coming alone.  I will really be out of my comfort zone.  But I am really excited about the work we will be able to do for the Lord!  My husband is a minister of a small church in Lewistown Montana.  We have 3 grown children and adorable grandchildren.  But I am concerned about making major fashion faux pas...hiking boots with our skirts??? (lol)

What's wrong with hiking boots and a skirt?

I am also a Big Sky-er.  I grew up in Helena.  I can imagine that this trip will really be a stretch for everyone in ways that we can't even imagine.  But God is in control and working everywhere around the globe and we get the opportunity to see what He is doing in a village in the Amazon.  How cool is that?

Good Morning Everyone!

My name is Cherylyn Pizza and I am the Oct Peru trip director.  I directed a youth trip to Peru in July and was in Peru for the boat's inauguration in april 2007.  I am excited to return to Pucallpa.  I am also very excited to meet all of you and expand our work in the village.

Please ask questions. This is a very unique experience, prepare to be stretched, have an adventure, and to grow in ways you haven't even dreamed about!

A couple of things come to mind.  Space is very limited so pack lightly.  It's very hot, humid, and buggy; pack accordingly but don't pack anything you can't get really dirty.  Sandals for the boat and sneakers or 'broken in' hiking boots for everything else.  No good shoes will be needed.  Skirts are fine but not necessary - and yes, hiking boots with skirts are great!  This fashion is alive and well here in Boulder Colorado!

And for the record, there really isn't any 'fashion' in the village or Pucallpa.  Modesty and comfort are key.

There is a 30kg (66lbs) total weight limit for baggage on the Peruvian planes.  There is a fee for total baggage weight over that.  My son and I traveled in July and together we had 28kg baggage.  We had plenty of stuff and did not lack for anything.

How can I help you get ready for this trip?

Cherylyn

Hi Friends!

As we're planning this trip, it would be really helpful to know a few things about skills and interests. I'm especially wanting to know if anyone would be interested in leading singing. We can choose very simple songs that most people will know--and can ask the women of Peru to teach us some of their worship songs as well. But would love to know if there are a few of you who I could chat with ahead of time about this.

Amy!
