Any ideas on what we can do to take place of the song that is part of the FFF day 4? We weren't planning to use that song during VBS and I would love to hear of any alternative science experiments or storylines that bring the bible point home: Jesus gives us the power to live forever.. AHA!!!
Thanks!!!

Maggie,

I don't have a suggestion for an alternative, but just wanted to let you know that the song was wonderful. You could have heard a pin drop. The whole thing was quite moving.

I plan to use (tomorrow) a simple alternative. Easy to get the required supplies on short notice.  Get some styrofoam packing peanuts- or some of the leftover styro from your VBS set and some acetone or fingernail polish remover. Acetone can be found in almost any store that sells painting supplies. I got mine at Wal-Mart.

I am using leftover styro from our set building supplies. I cut it into 3x5" pieces. Acetone dissolves styrofoam very quickly. This object lesson goes well with the science theme.

Have the kids help you name some sins. As they do, write one on each of the styrofoam blocks. After you have gathered enough "sins," show how Jesus wipes our sins away when we give them to him by placing each "sin" in the acetone. The acetone can be dyed red with food coloring if you prefer. Have to keep it kind of stirred up until you put the styro in, though.

Just a quick overview of my plan. Be creative and I'm sure there are better ways to do it.

Nathan

We almost decided not to do the skit either, and our Sonic Sing and Play leader did not even teach the song because it seemed too slow for our kids, but in the end, it didn't matter. We just showed the lyrics on the screen, played the music, and did the skit. It was stunning. We decided to use it again at our open house for the families that night, and we'll be doing it again in church on Sunday. That's how powerful it was.

We have a majority of younger children at our VBS, so we also elected not to use "Untitled Hymn".  Instead, we are using "I Have Come to You" by Sarah Pickering - a very singable, shorter song with a repetitive chorus that works well for our age group.  The song can be found on Great Big God - a kids series by Vineyard UK.  You'll find a clip at www.greatbiggod.com

I really believe that if you skip using the song you miss out on something very powerful.  I had my doubts at first too. And believe it or not it has become one of our kids favorite songs.

Thanks for the replies everybody! We had a very powerful experience melting the styrofoam peanuts in the acetone. The kiddos came and spoke their sins (or "a sin" ...or just didn't speak if they didn't want to) into the microphone and then tossed their peanut into a clear bucket of acetone. We did this while the DVD was playing the hymn. True, your experience may have been quite powerful - but it was not in the cards for us. Ours was powerful too, and isn't the point that we all reach the children and adults through our ministry?

Again - thank you SO MUCH for the helpful hints. Our VBS was a major success, many kudos to this forum!! Thanks, Group!

The best moments of the week came on Day 4, when we opted out of doing the song and skit.  We were at a Pavilion/Park with a lot of road noise.  There were many parents and extra people around, with a lot of distraction, and we didn't feel the skit would be effective.  However, we did the experiment with Iodine, Vitamin C and water, and it actually took the breath away from many people.  Kids, teens, parents and workers were shocked to see it work.  We had 30 kids on average, and 8 children accepted Christ following this experiment.  If you want the exact recipe, it's posted somewhere, or I can email it to you.  If you're going to do the skit, maybe this experiment could be done in Chadder's or Bible Blast or in addition in the Finale.  It's worth the extra time, and don't worry if parents see it.  That's the point, after all!

Don't miss the blessing, while VBS-ing!
