| | I couldn't get the iodine and vitamin C experiment to work so I did an experiment using acetone and packing peanuts. You label two clear glass jars with the words "You" and "Jesus". Have a large, clear bowl filled with water (the one from the first night works great) and label it "You". I covered the Jesus jar with red paper to represent Jesus blood. Put about 16 oz. of water in the "You" jar and 16 oz of acetone (find it at any beauty supply store for about $3.50) in the "Jesus" jar. Cover a large box with black paper and put white letters on it that say "Sin". Fill the box with packing peanuts. Wrap another large box with beautiful wrapping paper and ribbon. I had an adult come up and asked her what sin was. I asked her if she ever sinned. I had her take a few packing peanuts - Sins - out of the box and put it into the jar of water - "You". Nothing happened. I told her that perhaps she wasn't trying hard enough. She put her hand in the jar and mixed up the the peanuts. Nothing happened. I pulled out the large bowl and told her she wasn't trying hard enough. She put the peanuts in the bowl and really mixed them hard - still nothing. Then I talked about how Jesus is the only one who can take away sin. My volunteer picked up a few peanuts, but I reminded her that she has really sinned a lot, so she took an entire handful of peanuts and forced them into the jar. They disappeared. Handful after handful of peanuts disappeared into the jar. (They dissolved.) Following this demonstration I talked about how Jesus death is a gift to us. We can't earn our way into heaven. I used the box as a prop. After the ABC's of salvation we had an invitation with trained volunteers in the back to speak with the kids. It was very effective. |

| | Many have asked for this recipe, and it was really great, so I thought I'd just put it on here. Here you go! Sin Experiment 1 glass pitcher of clear water, 1/3 full 1 jar or vase with a couple of squirts of iodine and a little spray starch to turn it from brown to black. 1 opaque glass or jar with a cross on it, about ¾ full of water and about 30-40 vitamin C tablets crushed up. (not the orange flavored chewables, or your water will be orange, use white, and it doesn't have to be high mg) (2/3 of the black stuff in the clear water, add the vitamin c stuff, then add some more black stuff) Show clear pitcher as God’s original design for us to be holy and pure. Sin entered, pour half of the black liquid. The whole pitcher turns black Jesus died, paying the final price for sin, pour the vitamin C mixture into pitcher, turning it clear. When we accept Him, we are pure and clean again, like God wanted. Pour a bit of black liquid into clear pitcher at a time, telling that sin is still present, but the payment is still complete, all sin paid for at the cross. Pour a little more black, a little more, and a little more, letting people see that it remains clear. This was very effective as an invitation. Don't miss the blessing while VBS-ing!
