| | Linda, we just finished our VBS today--it was awesome, praise God!--and ran into many of the frustrations you did. It was my first time as director, so I felt a little frazzled pulling it all together, but in the end, it worked out well. Because ours is a small church and we only had 25 kids (it grew to 28 by the end), we did not use adult crew leaders. We actually used 6th-8th graders, which the manual doesn't recommend, but it worked out well because there were adults around to help out when they needed it. Those middle school age crew leaders were really important to our success. We also had people double up on stations, which the manual does suggest for small churches. Although I had one leader for each station due to the amount of planning involved, the helpers all did more than one job. For example, I had the crafts helper also serve in the snack area. The teens who did Spotlight Drama also helped in Cinema Science and Hyperspeed Games, and with decorating and set-up. In the end, I found that we could have done it with fewer volunteers, since many people had a lot of down time. We also had more teens and middle schoolers show up later in the week because they'd heard it was fun, so you will need to plan to manage them in case this happens to you. I ordered all the cinema science supplies from Steve Spangler, bought balloons at a party store (we filled our beaker with all different colors, not just blue), and used a Diaper Genie refill for the out of stock tube-a-loons. I found that the effort was worth it. Although this was my first year as director, it was my 10th as a VBS worker and this blows all the other ones away. It does seem overwhelming--a month ago, I was ready to quit!--but it will come together. |

| | I forgot to mention what you need for the Cinema Science kit: 5 hex nuts, 5 helium-quality balloons, goldenrod reactor paper (order from the Steve Spangler site), 5 tube-a-loons (use a diaper genie refill, cut into 6 ft lengths, each tied at one end), and a jar of "expando" powder (order the polyacrylate powder from Steve Spangler OR just tear open a disposable diaper and get the gel crystals out of that--it's the same thing!) We ordered from Steve Spangler and got our stuff in 3 days. Group should definitely have included this stuff in the Starter Kit and I'm sure they will next year. |

Thanks so much for your input and words of encouragement. I was just thinking today that I'm ready to quit. Of course, I wouldn't do it but, the stress is getting to me.
Thanks, too, for information on the science kit. This is a great help to me!
I think Group should put a link back up on their site to a science kit and explain it's out if stock, list the items in it, and give suggestions where they might be found. That would be a reasonable way to support the people who put their faith in Group this year. Do you know what items are in the Chadder's Theater kit?

| Linda in MN (7/9/2008) I'm looking for some supplies that aren't even listed on the website. I'm trying to link to them from the supply list calculator and I'm getting a blank page. I don't see them listed anywhere else. I'm looking for light and dark blue balloons and Power Lab stickers (not sad face stickers) Does anyone know what is going on? If they are out-of-stock, I wish it would just say that so I could save time searching and searching.
Thanks! LindaHey Linda! I was looking at your first post -- the one where you mentioned the light and dark blue balloons. I don't know if I would worry about the color of the balloons -- we didn't. I'm the Sing and Play director as well as the director, and I kept calling the balloons molecules -- I don't know why -- but anyway, the kids didn't know they were supposed to be anything else! As far as the Power Lab stickers are concerned -- I bought the large mailing labels and printed pictures of the Bible buddies on them. My Bible Blast leader said that was better anyway because there was more room to write on. Don't get discouraged -- it'll all work out! We didn't get the giant test tube, so we ended up putting shiny paper on a tall trash can -- it worked fine! We've done other VBS's before, but we've done Group for the past 4 years, and we really do love it! |

| Linda the science kit is what you need for chadder. There is no chadder kit. You will need items like plastic cups things you find at home. Do you have a school supply store in your area. I saw the testaloons, expando powder etc there. The hex nuts at a Lowes or home depot.
Hope this helps. I am praying for you.

| | If looking at a picture of the Cinema Science kit would help it is pictured my power lab catalog. In the middle of the catalog there are four pages of outlet items on heavier paper. It is pictured at the bottom of the first page. I found the expando powder at Five Below in the $1 tricks section. I think one of the reasons that Group VBS has so much "stuff" is that it is so much more hands on for the kids. Yes, more work on our part but also much better for the kids. It's not merely entertaining...it has the power to change their lives.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not really worried about the colors of the balloons. That was just one example of so many things not available. Yikes!
I've haven't seen the stickers online. What are they for? Do they need to write on them? Do you need a different buddy for each day? I've given my Bible Blast guide to my station leader and she is out of town. I also have on my list that she needs "Power Blab" stickers. Is that the same thing or maybe it was a typo. I mentioned before that I'm confused
