We are having a blast with our "scaled down" Jerusalem Marketplace VBS!  Our only worry is the playground...The Mill Game to be played will be WAY above the heads of our preschoolers...what can we do in its place?  Any ideas? Thanks!

Preschool games suggestions:

1. Musical chairs without the chairs. Form a circle and use the VBS CD and have them walk, when the music stops have the children sit down quickly. It doesn't matter who was first they just like to play. This game usually lasts a good while. Switch songs from time to time.
2. With the Frisbees you can take objects that you have already like beans or artificial fruit and let the children take turns and see how fast they can fill them up.
3. With the javelins you can lay them on the floor and they can jump back and forth over them. As the playground leader gives the command to jump. And then just let them jump until they wear themselves out.
4. With the dreidels: you can spin it and whomever it is pointing gets to spin it next.
5. Practice the hand movements and sing the songs.
6. Come up with a cheer that tells about your tribe and teach it them. Like for Warrior tribes you could have them say boldly: “We are the warriors, the mighty, mighty warriors and then shout the name of their tribe really loud.” (Have them show their muscles and have a really fierce look.) Near the end of the week when they are really good at it ask the gathering director to let them come up front to yell their cheer. They can even say their chant when changing stations to keep them occupied.
When trying to come up with a cheer think of easy familiar tunes (like: row, row, row your boat, etc.) and put your own words to it that describes your tribe. Look at the back of you Tribe Leader Manual for the description of the tribes.
7. Very similar to a cute post I read on a forum earlier is to have one of your Roman Soldiers or Playground Director (if you do not have a Roman Soldier) give the children commands. Such as: Atten-hut! (Stand up straight and still), march, salute, face me, turn to your tribe leader, (if indoors) lie down on the ground (to be ready to hide from the enemy), and so on.
8. Pretend Jesus is coming and make a path (form two lines) of Palm branches and cloaks. Have a different child pretend to be Jesus each time and walk through the center of the two lines. Let girls pretend too. You can make palm branches by just using sheets of green construction paper to represent the leaves (they don’t even have to be cut out) the children don’t care. They have a great imagination. For the cloaks: gather small pieces of fabric or if you have bandannas use them for cloaks. Let the children switch to have a palm leaf or a cloak. Do a Google search on the computer: Type in “Donkey mask pattern” print it out and copy it onto brown construction paper and cut it out. (You may want to do more than one because construction paper tears easily). Then have a child hold the mask to his face, bend down and walk in front of Jesus.
Hope you enjoy these suggestions.

We were going to try the Mill game with pre-schoolers, and if it didn't work we'd change to something simple.

God Bless,

Matt
