I am a newly appointed Children's Director. The program has really gone down hill over the last 3 years, which has left me with almost no volunteers. I am started a new curriculum, basically from scratch. i've sent many emails to former teachers, pleading for some help. does anyone have advice as to where to go from here?

hi, i hear where you're coming from! i've been director for 2 years now. i would definitely invite the old teachers back. i would also try to publicize the need for children ministry teachers during the church service maybe through a skit or some publishers have a publicity dvd to recruit volunteers. ask parents to consider assisting in some capacity and let them know for how long they will need to commit. they could do the story telling and another could do the craft. you may also need to consider combining age groups but most of all you will need to pray that God will lead you to the people who will be a good fit. jim wideman's bk has recently inspired me. it's called children's ministry: volunteers that stick. he talks about having a job description and volunteer handbk readily available so perspective volunteers will know what they are in for. once you get your teachers, you will need to continue to be there for them by sending emails, making phone calls, sending thank you notes, etc. also, have periodic meetings with them and offer trainings. i hope this helps...God's timing is always right on time, so pray and he will deliver.

thanks for your suggestions... i am trying to actively do almost all of this. coming from a very solid youth program, i know how important it is to have continuous contact with the volunteers, and make them feel appreciated. i really like the idea of having a volunteers handbook- i'm definitely going to look up the book you mentioned.. thanks for your help!
