Is it just me, or do the songs seem a little more masculine this year?  I know I am in a terribly small minority as a man who led worship this past year, but I want the young boys to see a man worshipping God, and not afraid to do the motions.  Several of the Power Lab songs were really difficult to do.  You Never Let Go was in a terrible key for a guy to sing, I had to keep jumping octaves to be able to keep from screeching or going below my range.  God of Wonders felt like I was just waving my arms in the air.  I barely used it.  And the worst was Untitled Hymn.  The fact that on the DVD they only have girls singing it is the first give away.  It is hard enough to get boys to come to VBS and participate without doing songs that are so "girly"!  Dance for Jesus?  I looked ridiculous swaying around on that motion.

OK, reality was I looked ridiculous a lot of the time anyway, but that was different.  My point is, from what I have seen/heard of the Crocodile Dock music so far, it seems to have more of a fun, rock, bluegrass feel to it.  I hope that is more the case for all of them.

Anyone agree?

Never Let Go is also in a terrible key for me!  And I'm a woman!  LOL

I, for one, LOVE the sound of the music for CD.  I love rock, but there is a special place in my heart for bluegrass/zydeco music because it's just so much fun.  We serve a rural church where so many folks are really into country music (not me so much) but I think it will be a big hit!

Whew! Power Lab songs were rough. I mean, they were great, but I'm strictly an alto, so leading worship left me hoarse most days. Then I still had to teach games (can we say outside voice??), crafts, and the finale!! Our older saints kind of turned up their noses when they heard the rock-ey music. A more country style will definitely suit our church better. Can't wait to hear all the songs!!

is my life!

Our kids LOVED the music.  Is there anything better than seeing 11 and 12 year old boys singing AND doing ALL the motions?  I don't think so.  With the exception of the very over the top motions for "God of Wonders", we loved all the songs.  We knew many of them, so it made it doubly fun to learn the motions and sing familiar songs.  I think the wide variety of video locations really helped our worship time to stay fresh.  I imagine that Crocodile Dock may sound a little blue-grassy, but that was true for the Western sound of Avalanche Ranch.  They won't ALL be same-old sound.

I think Group did a good job of variety, really!  One suggestion, let the guys on the video have a more relaxed look on their faces.  Forcing a smile and doing BIG motions makes guys uncomfortable... even girls.

That's it!

strange... my 4th-6th grade boys loved the songs and the motions for power lab... but i think it's also because they just loved power lab theme...

but for crocodile dock... i think the music is AWESOME... it's been two months since the field test, and i'm still singing the songs or i find myself humming to the tunes of "i get down, He lifts me up..." "i will not be afraid..." etc... serengeti trek was my favorite soundtrack... but croc dock's soundtrack may come VERY close!!! =)

In the past we've always had a problem with the "tween" boys participating in the music & motions.  However, one of our 200lb., teenage, linebackers was helping out this last VBS & I was amazed to see ALL of the boys getting into the music.  All of a sudden it was the "cool" thing to do.  I had to wonder why I'd not thought of such a simple solution before!

I agree--it makes a HUGE difference when you have some guys (teenagers or dads) who get into it. Recruit those hammy youth group members!

I've been on the general forum, not knowing us songleaders have our own! Glad I found you!

I just want to encourage ambroseofmilan that we had the same issues with "You Never Let Go". Thankfully we had opted to have a live band for all our songs and they could change the key, but parts were still really low or quite high. Though I absolutely LOVE "Untitled Hymn", I knew it wouldn't fly at VBS. So, I sang it as a solo for an offertory a few weeks prior, with 5 girls doing the choreo. It was very meaningful. Don't feel you need to use all the songs they offer! The kids will get to hear them all on the CD. My predecessor used 3-5 of the new songs each year. Last year I used 5; this year I used 6 and the band asked for more! So, I will increase it, but still exclude some entirely. We use old favorites (like "I Am a CHRISTIAN" or "Somewhere in Outerspace", or you can use past Group songs), strategically chosen according to the theme, as fillers so there's less new to learn.

We did God of Wonders as an exit song - something we, the worship team singers, sang as kids left the sanctuary. Since they weren't watching us anyhow as they needed to watch where they were going, choreo was unnecessary. And GOW's choreo was way, way too much to learn!!! All other songs' choreo was not hard at all. I do wish they'd avoid things that the kids can hardly do in the pews, like turning around.

As I said on the other forum, I'm not real excited about CD's music, from the little I've heard of it. "I Will Not Be Afraid" sounds monotone. But "I Get Down" is sure to be one of my favorites! Does anyone know how I can get music clips for the songs - more than the background music to the promo videos? How about a list of all the songs? Like, which will be the remixed favorites besides "This Little Light of Mine"?

I have 4 kids with me on the VBS worship team, ages 8-13 and one is a guy. That is a good idea to use a line backer! Kids really respond to kids!

To make it easy to schedule practices, I used sisters as well as my own daughter. Less family calendars to contend with!

For our Jerusalem Marketplace we had 3 teenage boys lead our music!  (One was our Synagogue Leader and the other two were our Village Playground leaders too.)  For the most part, the just focused on the actions and let the CD sing the songs, but they were just wonderful!  They were so excited to do it, and they got all the kids very excited as well!

They were also very excited about wearing a costume!
