Hi,
Our church is large and we could have 100 4th/5th graders in the room at one service. Are there any other large churches that are using this curriculum? How is it working?
Also, I'm a bit concerned about the lack of teaching with this curriculum. Any inadequacies there from someone else?
Thanks so much for your input!
Laura

We have 3 hours of Bible study over the weekend for the 4th and 5th graders and each of them run anywhere from 50 to 100 kids.  It works, but we have had to rethink some of the structure, just to make it work well for us.  A lot of the games and activities do not work well with that many kids in a relatively small space and we have to think through each one specifically.  A lot of times it means modification but often enough it means we don't even try it.  Other things work into that equation as well such as demographics of the group, discipline issues and ratio of teachers to students.  However, we haven't had any problems making it work and the kids seem to love whatever we end up doing.

As far as the teaching, I would say that it might not be as direct as traditional curriculum tends to be, where you cut it up and spoon feed them the lesson you want them to get, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it is lacking.  It is merely different in that it requires a bit more of an open format as it is discussion driven.  That kind of curriculum is hard to write because you never know where the conversation is going to go.  I think it provides the structure by basing everything off of 4 or 5 sections of scripture, asks some though-provoking questions, but it really depends on the dynamics of the group as far as where the lesson goes.

My opinion, of course, and that may be biased because I've had such good interaction with it.

If you can't make it with cardboard and duct tape, it ain't worth makin'...
