Just for a little bit of background info, my name is Kayla, I'm from a small town that is half AC (I'm methodist) and half Athiest, for the most part. I'm starting a Youth Group that will hopefully promote Christianity not being boring - because that, I believe, is the main reason high school kids don't want anything to do with religion. Being in a town that is so hugely apostolic, many of them see Christians as people who live under many rules, because many of these Apostolics do. That may work for them, but it doesn't work for many high schoolers, and it doesn't work for me. I'm starting a Youth Group that, hopefully, will challenge people and leave them wanting more.

This is where I need help. There are several soup kitchens around, I have come up with activities there and other challenges that will hopefully be more exciting than it sounds. I've come up with things such as a "Film Festival", where you can make films and sell them - all proceeds going to a charity we choose. Also on the list are "333" days - you have to give 3 compliments, 3 friendly messages, and $3 away in one day of every month.

I need more exciting games that help the community, or the world. I'm sure the Youth Group will start off being small, but I want it to be exciting - so more kids will join. Please, please, give me any ideas that could be helpful.

One more thing. I myself am only 15 - I've come to terms with the fact that i'm a born leader long ago, and have led high schoolers before - but never like this. If you have any tips on earning their respect that would be GREAT. I help at everything in church and often find that my ministers are too busy with the little kids to administer authority over the uncontrolable youth group "helpers" - so I take over. This so far has worked well, but a whole youth group? I know that I am meant to do this... I'm just not sure I'm ready. Any tips or youth ideas, please email me at reesk_lilah@hotmail.com or reply to this forum. (The email is more convenient for me but I will also check back here somewhat regularly).

Thank you VERY much!

In His name,
Kayla

Kayla,

I just want to encourage you in what you're doing. Thank you for responding to God's call for your life. I'm 16 and direct VBS. All the funds come from my own pocket but I love to do it for God. I would start out with the ideas that you have and build off of those. I think a Bible Study would be the way to go down the road. How do you incorporate lessons into your time with the teens? Feel free to e-mail me at vbsaddict (at) gmail (dot) com and I can help you with any ideas or curriculum for your lessons. I hope God uses you and blesses you through what you're doing.

God Bless,

Josh T. in Ohio
