I love the Grapple topics - they are edgy and relevant to the students, and for me, a great place to jump off from. As teachers, we know our students, and often add great ideas to the lesson plan offered. Listening to the other posts, I know I'm not the only one who 'adapts'! We don't all teach the lessons at the same time, so if God has given you a really great idea to go along with one of these lessons, please share!

Although the lesson is past, here's one I did for the lesson on "What if Someone Hates Me?"
(by the way, I had students really react to that word 'hate' - 'it's too strong of word' etc, very good discussion!)

I brought many foods that kids typically don't like - liver, spinach, oatmeal, celery, anchovies, peas ...

I asked the students how they felt about these foods. Great reactions! Some loved them, some hated them. I let them taste the ones they wanted to try. We then wrote down how we felt about those 'hated' foods. Then (from the lesson) we made a 'pose' how we would feel if someone used those words about us. That was the intro to the lesson.

After the lesson, I brought out foods I had prepared using some of those 'hated' foods, things the student would like better. Oatmeal cookies, wasabi peas, pizza rollups (with a little spinach in it - the loved these), crackers for the liver pate, ranch dip for the celery (they requested peanut butter but I didn't have it), fish sticks.

The point: Kindness can do a lot to change hate. And, sometimes no amount of goodness can change the hate (liver for instance), in those cases we just have to swallow it anyway!

Please share your ideas, especially if you have any on the 'weird' lesson.
