I'm looking for a fun, new Christmas program for our Sunday school kids this year. Pastor and I are looking for something creative and a little less traditional than the basic telling the story of Jesus' birth. I came across Group's instant pageants and while I have never used them, the church where I serve has used "A Mouse's Tale" (however that was 11 years ago and many of the people who put it together are no longer members here).

Pastor and I really liked that all our kids had speaking parts in the program last year so we're kind of looking for something similar for this year, but more in a dialog format rather than recitations and microphone passing. From what I've read about Group's programs, the kids don't talk at all except to sing. Have any of you used the program with the kids speaking instead of the CD? Does it work as nicely or should it really be done as instructed in the book?

Thanks!

We did that at our church about two years ago and it was absolutely adorable. Wasn't real hard to do and the kids loved it and were so excited! We let the kids do the speaking parts and everything went really smoothly. God Bless!

This looks like the right speed for my kids.  Is it a musical?  And if so, does it have familiar Christmas tunes?

Hi Everyone!!  I'm looking for a "Chrismon" idea to use in our Christmas program this year.  Has anyone used this idea in your Christmas program and are you willing to share it?

Thanks,

Mammachurch

Long ago, our church used a Chrismon based service to start the hanging of the greens. The church Chrismon tree was bare except for the lights. The lights were off. We put all the Chrismons (made by ladies of the church and children's SS cl) out on tables in the foyer. As everyone came into the service they were told to take a Chrismon from the table.

We alternated carols and prayers with a description of each kind of Chrismon and what they symbolized. (Ex. - The Angels appeared to the shepherds.... Crowns proclaim the kingship of Jesus. The star lighted the way for the Wisemen... etc.) Different adults, children or youth, took turns sharing about each kind of Chrismon. After each descriptions, those that had picked that kind of Chrismon came forward and hung it on the tree while everyone else sang another carol.

It was so beautiful to see Dad raising their children in their shoulders or holding them on the many step stools to place their Chrismon high on the large tree. And to see the beautiful white and gold ornaments against the dark green tree branches.

Usually we saved "Joy to the World" for the closing carol. As we sang, they turned on the tree lights. It was a joyful and meaningful way for the church family to begin the Advent Season. (And nobody even cared that we sang all the "Christmas hymns" during Advent!)

We did A Mouse's Tale 2 years ago. It was very fun! We told the kids to lip sync the spoken parts and use hand gestures at the same time. We told them that the congregation won't see their lips as much as their hands, but they still focused on the lip syncing and had few arm movements. Next time, I think I'll tell them to NOT lip sync and ONLY use hand motions. I'll suggest they pretend they're Disney costumed characters that only express with their motions.

I like that the congregation helps to sing. It takes the pressure off of us! The hardest part was helping the camels do their "Camel Rap", but it was a hit!

Last year, I attempted to put a little something together myself, thinking it would be easier (all familiar Christmas carols), but I think it was more work, so this year, I think I'll just get another Instant Pageant because it's all ready to go!
