I had one of my youth the other day ask me during our discussion time about war and what you believe.  We had somehow ventured on to the topic of God's "understanding" and the difference between killing during war and killing as in murder, when this question was asked "What does the Bible say about going to war if you don't believe in what the war is about?"  This kid is really into military, and Im not sure if he meant the present situation we are currently in or if he meant in general, but I was stumpped, and I still am.  I think what he meant was "How do you handle a situation where you join a branch of the military own your own, and then forced to go into a war you don't agree with?"

Toughie...

There is the concept of conscientious objection, but I would sincerely tell a youth with that type of dilemma to really analyze whether the military is the correct choice (assuming that this is a potential career for him).

I'm sure there are probably some ex-military out there that could give you some good advice.
My dad spent 18 years in the Marines. When you join the military, you are not your own you are property of the US government. If the government says "go" you have to go. This student may need to re-think career options.

I had this very discussion with a teen who wants to fly planes and was considering the air force.  After much prayer he decided that since our country was pushing God out of the way he could not kill other people for them  Now he has decided to become a missionary pilot and is looking at going to Moody's Flight institute.  These discussions and prayer times with teens are soooo great.

Joyfully,
Barb

I'm a police officer and a youth minister.  As a police officer I may one day have to kill someone and it comforts me that if that day comes I won't be considered a murderer in the eyes of God.  This website has a good answer to that question.

I'm not saying that someone should seek to go to war but those who choose to serve in the military and police they should understand that God is only against murder, self defense and the defense of others and even the death penalty are all condoned in scripture.  It is my sincere hope that I and no other police officer or military personnel have to kill another.
