This idea is a bit premature but I'm planning to have a gumbo dinner as our VBS kickoff function. With that in mind, how about maybe selling tickets to a gumbo dinner.

Menu:
Chicken Gumbo & Seafood Gumbo
white rice
potato salad
rolls
iced tea

In the past, we've had area businesses donate items for which we held a silent auction during dinner.

I'd love to have some our Louisiana natives to share other food ideas from that region.

That Sounds Real Good. I want to thank you I am going to approach all the ideas with my director and the session . I also thought about a Chilli Cook-off and use it as an outreach also. ( open it to the public).

We'd also like to do a fundraiser dinner in early April so I need some real Bayou type food recipes. Does anyone want to share?

Depending on your budget...

I thought it was a neat site anyway.

Check out this new site I found with many recipes for a Cajun & Creole Dinner.

http://www.tabasco.com/taste_tent/tabasco_recipes/index.cfm

Some of the recipes lean towards Mardi Gras favorites, but I found some really good ideas.

Gumbo is more of a cold weather food.  It's good any time of year though.  We usually do Jambalya and white beans.   This is usually served with potato salad or green salad, bread of some kind and a dessert.  We usually sell them for $5.00 a plate.  We also do fried catfish dinners or BBQ chicken.  One year our youth did Po-boys.  Those were roast beef and very messy(New Orleans Style).

I posted this in the swamp suppers and thought it help here as well.

There is a place in Baton Rouge that is a local favorite.  It is called Tony's Seafood.  They have a website with receipes.  If you would like more ideas for menu items.  Tony's also ship worldwide.

Mmmm, that site is making me hungry!  I love crawfish etouffe, I'll have to give that recipe a try.  Thanks.
