I don't like reading a storybook aloud in front of large groups. Even if you do the old school show and pan, children end up straining to see the pictures or they have to sit so far back they can't even tell what the pictures are. So when I was asked to do a story time in the sanctuary to kick off our PJ Birthday Party for Jesus, I wasn't real enthusiastic because I assumed no matter how wonderful the storybook, it couldn't be effective if the children couldn't see the beautiful illustrations.

Then, the leader for the event and I had an epiphany! Why not put the book illustrations on powerpoint slides? We asked our AV team about the idea and they are graciously scanning the story book and formatting each illustration into slides. Now, we can project each pages on the big screens as I read from the actual book.

Now everyone can see and enjoy the illustrations... plus the older children can read along silently as I read aloud... Cool!

This is a brilliant idea, and not too tough for the tech savvy. I will use this idea for sure! Thanks for sharing with us.

You can also do something like the VBS Spotlight Drama.  Take the story and figure out how you can have children pose for photos to illustrate the story.  Then put THAT with the Powerpoint!  We're doing this for our Children's Christmas program this year.  They read, we show previously taken photos and then the kids all sing in between.

Two years ago we took a book and had the children draw the illustrations themselves that went with the text.  Then we put those on the screen.  It was so sweet.  I even printed them all out and bound them in a book for each of the kids.

I really like the spotlight drama idea! We could do the crafts part of the event first and get those photos while they are doing that... then end with the spotlight drama. I could put our AV team member on that project. She did Spotlight Drama 2 years ago so it shouldn't be a big deal... Thanks, Peggy, you always have such simple, yet "pow!" ideas!

Well, we had the program tonight and it turned out so cute.  Here are one of the pictures we took:

And then we also asked folks to submit "classic" pictures.... we won't call them old!  LOL

This pic just CRACKS ME UP!  Of course, Paige's mom turned that one in and she just died!
