Due to some budget cutbacks, we're writing our own VBS this year. I'm thinking along a space theme, because it hasn't been done here ever before. We'll be writing our own lessons, and games. Also, I think it would be cool to find a previous year's VBS that had a space theme, and use the music from it. VBS songs are the catchiest, and doing Sunday School songs just doesn't cut it. Is there a place to find last year's VBS stuff cheap?
I'm going to need some ideas and help, or I might just go temporarily insane. All of the churches in our area pick weeks and themes that are different, but seem to complement each other. It's always beach, or amazon, etc. This year, we're going to be the church that goes against the flow, and what better place to ask for advice and ideas than a forum of fellow youth pastors and workers that want their ministries to be different too?

| I would highly recommend not writing your own curriculum. I would personally never write my own VBS curriculum. VBS publishers have many standards that they have to meet when they write their curriculum. Group had a great article about this in their Children's Ministry Magazine a while back. I can send it to you if you'd like. I'd be willing to help you find a spaced themed VBS curriculum if you'd like. A space theme hasn't been done in a while. What publishers do the churches around you use? God Bless, Josh

| I'd actually prefer not to write my own, but I'm forced to because of our church's budget right now. If you can find me a space theme that I can buy out of my paycheck at a greatly reduced "youth minister salary" price, I might spring for it. Otherwise, my hands are kind of tied. As far as publishers are concerned, we have a Christian bookstore up the road that can order from just about any publisher we need them to. Thanks!

| Hey OBX! What part of the OBX are you on???? Group did a Space Mission Bible Camp MANY years ago, but none of the music was particularly "space" oriented. I would come up with a single idea that you want to teach. Like "Be adventureous for God" or "God is the Creator." Think of Group's taglines like "Where fearless kids shine God's light." What do you want kids to know at the end of VBS. Start there and the rest will become much simpler. Some songs that you could think about using: Awesome God Forever Famous One God of Wonders I can't remember the name but it goes "O Lord our God how majestic is your name in all the earth!" I thought of some scriptures: Gen 1:1 Psalm 19:1, 57:10&11, 102:25 John 3:16 Jeremiah 10:12, 23:24 Daniel 6:27 Haggai 2:6-7 Matthew 6:9-10, 6:19-21

My thoughts:
A. Form a Team - have others help do the research and writing/games/crafts/etc...
B. Throw this same question out on some children's ministry forums, I think probably more children's ministers do VBS than do youth ministers.
C. Does the church understand that this will still cost money?
D. Does the church understand that there will be much more required of them to pull this off as opposed to a pre-packaged deal?
E. Cover the walls and ceilings with black plastic and paint glow in the dark stars all over them and then take those styrofoam balls of different sizes and paint them like planets and hang them from fishing line from all the ceilings. Cover flourescent lights with black plastic and just cut one hole in the middle so it looks like beams of light coming down from the sky.
F. Pull your hair out now because you will probably be pulling it out later.

Andy -
I've created a team of 4 people to work on this with me. YM is not meant to be done by a single person, especially when it comes to VBS!
They know it will still cost them money, but they're hoping to keep it at little or no cost. Apparently, I make enough to be able to write my own VBS without buying curriculum. (Oh, if they only knew what our salaries were...)
I like the decorating ideas. Simple, easy to do, and easy to clean up!
I'm thinking of shaving my head, thus saving me a lot of pain later...
Also, let's do lunch sometime, because you're only 20 minutes away. And, for everybody else, if you haven't read the ADD youth pastor's blog, do it. Lots of good stuff on there.
