Hello all-

So I've decided to use Psalm 118:24 (This is the day) for our winter family night.  I will be having the families spend $86,400 play money.  We will talk about how God has given each family member 86,400 seconds a day to spend.  I will explain about all that Jesus did in 3 short years of ministry.  I will then pose these questions:

  • What is your favorite thing to do with your family?
  • What do you do each day to thank God for that day?
  • Everyone in your family should have one penny.  This represents today.  When it’s your turn, put your penny in the bag and say one thing you’re thankful for TODAY.  Fathers, spend a moment and thank God for the time you have TODAY with your family.

I'm looking for an item that I can then send home with the families to remind them to cherish each 24 hours God gives us, one day at a time.  Do you have an idea of something simple that I could make/buy that would fit this?

Also, if you have any other Group type questions that might fit, that would be great.

Thanks everyone!

I'm not sure how long your event is going to last or if you are wanting to make the items yourself before hand or have the family make them together, but a photo frame of the family together that night may be a good idea.  We have done photo frames the last couple of years at VBS and it has been a huge hit.  We even have some people that won't hang anything on their fridge, but they will hang these.  Also a lot of families don't have time to have their pictures taken together.  It could be a craft session.  When the families come into the event you can have their picture taken and either do it with a polaroid or print them there on a printer.  Just an idea though!

Good luck and have fun!

Stephanie

What if you made a bank of some sort so they could continue the penny activity at home each day?  Then at the end of the year they could be encouraged to give those pennies back to God in some way... help a needy family, send it to a missionary, etc.

Good ideas! You might also take a look at these ideas and see if you can adapt to your lesson:

(Sorry, I tried to put links here, with varying degrees of success...)

Would love to hear how it goes!

How about a container used during a devotional time as a family. In the container put in differant things you can do as a family.  Then have another container to have change in it and when the container is full donate the money for something special for church or other needs including spending love to a family in need.

God bless

At my previous church, we did Thankoffering boxes. Each family had a box...sort of like a bank made out of old greeting cards stitched together. Everytime something happened that someone was thankful for, they dropped in a coin. Once a year, the boxes were presented during worship and the $$ used for the charity of choice that year.
I think this could easily be adapted for what you are doing...I THINK OT even has some sort of undecorated bank you could use OR a decorated coffee, peanut, etc can could work.
Blessings!
Let us know how it turns out!
