We are a small church (avg att 72) in a small country town.  This is the first year we have had a mid-week program for kids (K-5).  We are only offering the program through the school year.  I am wondering what other churches offer in the summer for their children.  We do run a VBS program in mid-June but currently don't have anything planned until school starts back up.  What are your ideas?

We also have a smallish ministry, but we do keep it going in the Summer. We really think it's a good time to get to know the kids, encourage them to bring friends and do a lot of relational teaching. We have VBS, which is teaching intensive, but our other weekly cl are not just more of the same. We sometimes spend more than one week on a lesson to really give it the full treatment, using the stations we had at VBS. It's easy to reach families in the summer too. The attendance is sporadic, because of vacations and such, but we've found it to be great for different kinds of memories. Consider a monthly mission project or a family night, a service project night, etc. Since it stays light longer, it really allows a lot of different kinds of things. Consider VBS caroling, like kids on a trailer advertising VBS. You might put together a back-to-school play, complete with songs sand drama. Just some thoughts.

Best of luck in planning!

Hi Aqua-

Prior to me being here, the midweek programs would be stopped for the summer.

Last year we did an apartment outreach and brought our kids with us.  It didn't matter who showed up as long as they played (and what kid doesn't want to do that?!?)  It was a very simple time of playing games simply to get to know the families at the complex.  It was amazing how many families showed at VBS due to our outreach.  We also had family movie nights the last Wednesday of each month.

This year we are doing a little different.  We will continue our "normal" midweek program through June.  Then in July we will sponsor 2 apartment outreaches (one for the youth group & one for CM).  This leads up to our VBS which is the first week of August.  We will then take the last 3 Wednesdays in August off.

I would recommend some kind of outreach.  It gives the kids a taste of ministry as well as changes it up for your teachers.  We have found that our kids love hands on activities, especially helping others.  Summer is one of the easiest times to do this since you can get away with more time (if needed) and sunlight.  Even if you visit a local rest home or take treats to your church shut ins.

Hope that helps!
