I don't know if you've heard of World Missionary Press or not, but they print materials to be sent out as a mission project and they have great ideas for VBS. They are not a craft, but booklets and coloring books can be sent worldwide. If you’d like to see these ideas, just click here: http://www.wmpress.org/vbs.shtml or email Rose@wmpress.org with your mailing address so that she can mail you a copy.

You could make a felt turtle from a homemade pattern and fill with poly-fil or rice.

| We always choose one of our regular missions projects and have someone who represents them come and speak with us each night. The kids love the stories and pictures they share! All the money we raise goes to buy some items they have selected by need. We purchased a scooter one year to help them get from village to village. One year five of the kids from vbs were selected to ask questions to one of the orphans over the phone! It was 3 a.m. in Africia when our closing program took place, but he was so excited to tell the kids in America about his country! That's one I will never forget!

We have made our own turtles for the kids to keep or give to a friend. They will also be making dolls for children of Haiti. We purchased fleece for both; green for the turtles and brown for the dolls. Some older ladies of the church were very happy to help by sewing them. We will include the Salvation message with the dolls that will be hand delivered by congregation members in September. One of the missionaries in Haiti has told us that the kids would very much appreciate dolls. They are very basic with yarn for hair and simple fleece dresses or shirts.
Last year we did the very simple tie, no-sew fleece blankets and gave them to our local crisis pregnancy center with a hand written note from some of the older kids. I was amazed how well the kids did with these blankets. We got 11 done in one day with about 70 kids. I had the blankets cut and all they did is tie. Most of the kids were excited about this project...they asked lots of questions about the babies that were going to get them.

We collect food for the local food pantries. Any food left over from snack is also donated.

My missions person came up with a great project. Since we are "in the Bayou," we wanted to do a Katrina related service project. She found a project called 9th Ward Field of Dreams. The 9th Ward was an area hit hard by Katrina. The local high school sports programs still suffer from a lack of facilities. The goal is to develop a football/track complex open to the community.
At the same time as our VBS, our older youth with be in New Orleans for a national youth convention. We are hoping to be able to set up link via the computer so they can tell us all about their experiences down there.
Since it will be a monetary drive we will do a different craft on Day 5 not related to missions.

Hi,
We weren't wild about the mission craft either and decided to make fleece blankets, similar to a previous mission craft only single layer with fringe. We then contacted the local army and air force base and talked to a chaplain who is going to disperse the blankets (with the vbs books) to children who have a parent deployed overseas.
Hope this gives you an alternate idea!

| I just wanted to add that we decided to use the Operation Kid 2 Kid as one of our crafts, but since our offering in the past has always been donated to a mission project and this is our first year to use Group's curriculum I decided to put our offering money towards this project. We will pay for the turtles and shipping and then whatever is left over, which will be a good amount still, will go to the person distributing our turtles to help with their work. We are going to have the kids bring their turtles down the altar in our closing program.
