Hello all.

Our Church's youth ministry has sputtered and floundered for the last few year due to lack of leadership. I'm on the committee formed to try and fix it. We're planning on using Purpose Driven Youth Ministry as our blueprint.

Our plan is to finally hire a dedicated Youth Minister in the next 6mo - 1yr. In the interim I will probably act as the YM - I'm still doing a lot of Praying about this

I'm struggling about the job description for the prospective YM. Does anyone know of any resources they can point me to regarding clear job descriptions?

The way I see it the job description needs to involve our mission statement but it also need to have measurable goals. In my mind measureables are easier in the outreach portion of a ministry (PDYMs outer rings of "Community" and "Crowd") but when you get to the area of developing and strengthening the faith of your current students, how do you measure that? Outreach can be numbers driven. Getting new kids in the door and getting them to weekly worship can be quantified but how do you quantify spiritual growth? Personalizing it, if I have to do a yearly review of the ministry leader how would I avoid falling back on, "Oh well, the kids really seem to like him..."

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.
Kevin

This is a tough one. Think about what you are looking for.

What are you looking for in spiritual maturity in the youth? Are you looking for the youth to memorize 100 verses a year? Do you want the youth to have daily devotions? Do you want the youth to bring 3 people to the Lord each year? Do you want the youth to know the in's and out's of the Bible? Do you want them to be reaching out to the community? Do you want them building their natural and spiritual talents in music/leadership/etc? Is any/all of this even possible?

What kinds of talents are you looking for in that youth pastor? For instance, my biggest skill is teaching. I can take complex concepts and help youth to understand and apply them. Another youth pastor friend of mine is a father. He reaches out to the youth and acts as a father to them. As a result he draws in a lot of guys that have no fathers. I can't reach out to youth the way he does, and he can't teach solid biblical principles as well as i can.

Understand what you are looking for and that you can't have it all, and you will do fine.
