Hello everyone.  We are using the back pockets of old jeans for our buddy bags.  We'll attach the groups name tags with brass fasteners and let them also attach more fasteners for a studded look.  They will wear it around tiheir neck with fabric strips that they will hand color.  Each crew will use the same pattern or color for easy identification.  We can't afford the buddies, we have over 200 children, so I don't know if the buddies would all fit.

God Bless,

mari chin

We are doing the same thing. But we are cutting strips of the jeans(like down the leg) to use for the straps and letting the kids use fabric markers to decorate. Yes the bible buddies all fit. They even fit in little kids jean pocket. We have over 20 pairs of jean donated so far.

I am craft challenged. Could you detail how you will use the jean pockets? Will you just cut around the pockets? Will you need to sew around them to keep them from fraying? Will the pockets close at all?

Luckily, I have some wonderful volunteers for crafts. But before I make this suggestion, I thought I would try to envision your idea.

Thanks and many blessings.

Yes, I cut around the edge of the pocket but not right next to the stitching.  This pocket is doubled stitched so I don't have to worry and I think most pockets are double stitched.    The brass fasteners I was talking about could go through the entire pocket, you have to pre poke a hole and that could be how the pocket is closed.  We're attaching the AR name tags using the brass fasteners.  You could just use a string.  We're not using the buddies so I'm not doing that.  We are going to use daily cards with the buddy stamped on it.  They will be sticking out of the pocket and numbered by the day.  Each day the children will write the new bible verse on the card.  I will attach all the cards together with a brass fastener at the bottom so none of the cards get lost.  I hope that helps.  I going to get my oldest daughter to help me post a picture.

If you need more ideas, let me know.  We're on a tight budget, so we probably only spend about 3.00 per a child , for the week, on crafts.  I have to make up most of the crafts.

God bless,

marichin

If I can get the jeans donated I am thinking about trying this one. I think I will leave 1/2-1" around the bottom of the pocket though and let the kids fray the edges for fringe. Like the cut-offs I wore as a kid.

dme,

I saw that you were looking for a tie-in for day five. If you haven't come up with one yet, here's an idea.  I ordered plain colorful bandanas, and in one corner, we are going to have the children trace a sheriff badge and then let them write GOD IS IN CHARGE around it.  Then they can trace other western shapes on the rest of it using fabric markers.  From what I have learned over many years of doing crafts with children, is that they want to do it there own way.  Most of the time it looks completely different from any of my samples that I make.  I like letting them personalize their crafts.

God bless,

marichin

I agree that the kids should decorate their crafts in their own way. I think that is one of the reasons the parents like to see all the crafts on display at our closing program. Fortunately the person who took crafts over from me the past couple years does the same thing. Maybe after watching me(was the former craft helper/assistant). I like that idea. I had thought about bandanas, but wasn't sure, but I like the idea of putting the God's in charge star on it. I'll have to run it by my crafts director when he returns from spring break.

We did these years ago with another publisher's VBS that was a sheep ranch theme.  They were called "shepherd's pouches" and the kids loved them!  One of the older girls was teasing her brother about his "purse" and he quickly let her know that it was a shepherd's pouch.  We were able to get almost all of our jeans donated and we got the rest at thrift stores on their half-price days.  This was a very inexpensive, very fun craft.  Your kids will love it!
