| I've been feeling like I need to address the issue of the type of language we use when we're not at church. Does anyone have any ideas for games or activities that would tie in with Eph 4:29 or James 3? Thanks

| There is a 'game' where the team(s) take a travel size toothpaste tube and squeeze it out on to a plate. You could have two teams race to see who gets their tube empty first. You could also award points for the team that got theirs closest to empty. Then you tell them the second phase is to get the toothpast back in to the tube. What they don't realize but soon figure out is that it is impossible to do. I have had students offer to eat the paste and 'spit' it back in to the tube. But, it just doesn't go back in to the tube. Spin from this to show that our words are the same way. Once they are out of your mouth, you can't put them back in. You may get some arguments as to wether or not they actually got any of the toothpaste back in. So, be prepared to move forward from there. Good luck and God bless.

| This isn't a "game" but I bought a "Mr. Mouthy Mouth" at officeplayground.com. I'm planning on using it for a similar lesson. He can just say all sorts of outrageous things and I plan on making the kids make me tame my fake tongue! LOL Nothing TOO over the top, of course, but enough to get them a little defensive.
He's ugly and pretty disgusting in person, just like our tongues can be if we don't follow God's word! http://www.officeplayground.com/mrmouthymouth.html

I have used this illustration several times in several venues.
1. Have the group build a paper community (fold paper, cut out into the shapes of people, color them).
2. Have them tape the cut out people together, to a piece of cardboard & talk about community.
3. Bring the set outside & then read the passage in James about the tongue.
4. Secretly pull out a torch & light the set on fire. Talk about how the tongue is like a torch/fire that can destroy a community & people.
5. Let them stand in silence as the set burns...this is a very visual object lesson that will really stick.
6. After a few minutes ask for thoughts.
7. Close in prayer
*have a bucket of water & a fire extinguisher nearby. Chances are it will be windy when you do this.
Hope this inspires you.
