Has anyone found an additional resource for the Bulla disks - these were used in both the Jereuselum Marketplace and now in Rome, I've looked and looked but have yet to figure out what these are. Unfourtnatly we are on an extreamly tight budget I love this project but am having trouble coming up with additional financing for this project. If we can't find the disks, we'll probably just do a bottle cap locket.
Bottle Cap Locket

What You Need:

  • 2 (two) metal bottle caps per child (the kind that come on a glass beverage bottle)
  • 1 (one) 6 to 8 inch piece of 1/2 inch wide ribbon (I like chiffon or something like that) per child
  • 1 (one) tiny paper circle (to fit inside 1 cap) per child
  • red stamp pad
  • white flat spray paint
  • clear spray paint
  • tiny photo of child (if you don't have one of your students the Polaroid i-zone Pocketcamera makes perfect little pictures)
  • thin ribbon (pink or red) about 1/16 inch wide --about a yard for each child
  • beads with large holes (I like the sparkly faceted kind in clear, pink, red, purple--it's also pretty to mix in different style beads of the same colors)
  • What You Do:

    1. Collect bottle caps (my husband brings them to me from the snack bar at the golf course). Place them all on a flat, clean surface, close together. Spray paint them white. (This is a step for the teacher).

    2. Have each child make a heart on one bottle cap by using the red stamp pad and printing a finger print two times to make the heart shape. Spray these with clear spray to protect the fingerprints. (This is a step for the teacher).
    3. Fold the 1/2" wide ribbon in half and tie in a knot. Using a glue gun, glue the ends of the ribbon inside the two bottle caps, one end on each leaving the knot right at the top of the caps so that they fit together like a clam shell and the loop of the ribbon is above the knot.(This is a step for the teacher). This loop will be used to string the locket onto the narrow ribbon.
    4. Cut photos to fit the inside of the bottle cap the same as the circle of paper you will be using to let the children write a message on. On the bottom half of the "locket" glue the picture. On the top half of the "locket" glue the message. Mine usually write something easy like "I love you" since most 5 years olds write in large print. Don't forget to remind your younger students to write tiny.
    5. Have students string completed locket onto long narrow ribbon, ( I cut mine about a yard long - they can always be shortened). Then have them string beads on either side of locket. I encourage mine to create a pattern of their choice. I let my students string as many beads as they like. Some do a few, some like to fill them up!
    6. A note to teachers of older students: your students may prefer to use the little seed beads (love beads) to string their locket on. In this case give them fishing line to string them on and encourage them to fill them up. These are really pretty when you choose pretty valentine colors.

Guildcraft has these:  http://www.guildcraftinc.com/Products/Bullas__217-194.aspx

You could also use cardboard disks covered in foil with a yarn necklace, like my daughter's Latin club does. The bottle caps are cute, though.  Do you know if you can buy them in bulk?  Otherwise it might be hard to come up with enough.

Locally, investigate your stores that sell beer-making supplies.  I bought some the other day for $2.95/gross.  If you don't have that resource available, you can buy them online by the pound at MoreBeer.  We got them there the last time we used them.  I honestly can't remember how many there were in a pound -- you'll have to call them and ask.

I love all the ideas I've seen posted on these.
I didn't see this mentioned, so I thought I'd post this alternative, too, that I found:

Maybe it can be helpful, too!

God bless!

I liked the key tag idea, but found aluminum tags at http://www.gemplers.com/product/152499/Round-Blank-Aluminum-Tags-100-box for $12.50 for 100.  I like them because aluminum should be soft enough to etch in addition to decorating.

How did you attach your bottle caps together after putting the small fish symbol inside?

I bought bottle caps for these from a beer supply company - under $4 for a package of 144 and we are going to add stick on jewels. http://www.homebrewery.com My husband drilled two holes at the top of each bottle cap using a drill press, and buffed off the rough edges. Baby yard or twine will fit through the holes and we will probably wrap tape around one end to make thread them through easier.  They stay together pretty well.

I'm going to try glue dots to hold on the pipecleaner fish symbols. Anyone else have ideas on that?

We are making our Bullas from felt and lacing up the edges so it is like a little bag.  The kids can decorate the outside of the felt plus we have colored stones and crosses they can glue on them.  We plan to put the Bible Point on a slip of paper for them to put on the inside.  Here is a web site with different types of Bullas, including fabric ones.  We are doing ours similar to the red one on this site.
