How do we get our teens to read the Bible? I have found that even some of the teens who have grown up in the church are not personally reading the Bible on a consistent basis, and personally have known this struggle as an adult. I'm not sure how to help inspire them to read their Bibles - rather than nagging.
I went through a eight week or so course with my guys on studying the Bible - how and why to do it. Some of the guys seemed to pick up the Bible occasionally as a result of the course, but nothing significant. Those who had been reading continued to read, those who hadn't didn't really start.
This month I've given them a challenge. I offered to give them $25 each if they would read their Bible six days a week. They have to read at least 1/2 chapter each day and let me know before they begin which book they are going to go with. They all took me up on the offer.
Tonight I'll see if it worked at all - if they have started reading. But I doubt the long-term success of this effort.

Dave--I have also struggled to get my SS kids to read the bible. We use FaithWeaver curriculum and the back of the Middle School/High School pages always have a list of scripture to read thru the week. I always remind them of this, but, like you, doubt they are doing it. I have managed to get the entire group (ages 2-17!) to start memorizing scripture. Each week, we go over the Key Verse for that lesson and the NEXT week, if they can recite it to me, they get an extra "coin" to put into their banks. (FYI: they earn a coin each week they come AND an extra coin if they bring a friend). At the end of each month, they get to trade their coins in for a prize or prizes, depending on how many coins they have. Amazingly, even the younger kids manage to memorize the gist of the scripture. Good luck on your endeavor and let us know how they do! Blessings! Kimberly

Well, I got to youth group and was heavily doubting that the guys would have remembered that they were to start on March 1st this challenge - but to my surprise every single one of them had and said they had been doing their reading. We had some deaths in the community so two of our leaders were out because of these and thus our guys and girls' time was combined, so I didn't really get a chance to talk to the guys about it - but the incentive seems to have worked. The real test will be next week when I begin to ask them about what they have been reading, if and how it has been affecting their life, and seeking out what it would take to see them develop this as a lifelong personal discipline.

I think that that's a good idea but you can't do that everytime because then they expect it.

I think that Youth should be at least memorizing Scripture if they don't have time to read their Bible. If they focus on one verse a day or something that helps with your faith as well.

God Bless,

I recently headed both the Children and Youth ministries, but relinquished my position as Youth pastor so that one of my assistants could step up to the plate. The first thing she did was set up a Bible reading program, "Reading the New Testament in One Year." I personally have read the whole Bible in less than a year, but that would be almost impossible to expect from the youth. It is hard enough for them already if they do not have the spiritual support at home, so what she did was set up a reading plan that consisted of reading one chapter a day.

I have created a "Jeopardy" type Power Point game that involves knowing the context of the assigned chapter to get them excited about the program. Even though it includes giving out prizes, the emphasis is not on the tangible rewards, but on the benefits of knowing and living by the Scriptures.

If you are interested in the PPT game send me an email and I will send you a copy.

Well, Dave--sounds like you have at least made a start--you may go broke getting it done, though!!!! Best of luck in leading these kids in God's word! Kimberly

Thanks for all the thoughts so far. I really appreciate Pastor Joe's thoughts. I think that is a great idea, and a way to inspire them without going quite so broke. :-) I am hoping to get a copy of that PowerPoint as well and think about how I can customize it for our teens.

Dennis/David,

I am working on creating instructions for the PPT game. I will e-mail it to you when I am finished.
