| | I just can't justify paying my students to read the Bible. It should be something that they want to do. How did we start reading the bible everyday? Someone praying for us. Someone being excited about what the bible says. I think we need to look at what we are doing and get excited to read the bible with our youth. I struggle with getting the sunday school class to read the bible everyday. But we just keep encouraging them and teaching straight from the bible to make it real . I pass out a monthly reading plan for them to read through the bible in a year for encouragement. I may never see all of my students wanting to read the Bible but we sure can watch a few who will be doing the same someday, getting others to read the Bible. Yes I want all my students to read the Bible everyday, it has life, so I keep praying for each one and encouraging them. We have a saying in our class "how is your butter knife?" Meaning how is your sword of the spirit, are you using Gods Word as a butter knife or something sharper. We talk about reading Gods Word every week. Put it by your bed read before you go to sleep or read when you first wake up. Just an encouragement. Then we let the Holy spirit do the rest. I would love to see each one of the student reading the Bible everyday, so we just keep praying, believeing and ancouraging. Lori |

| | I agree, but like I mentioned earlier it is not as easy as it once was. I don't see it as "paying" them to read the Bible, but if that is what it takes for them to read it, then amen. The important thing is to get them to pick up the book and open it. Then once that is accomplished that is when I pray my heart out. I pray that the words of truth would speak life into them. One thing I encourage our youth to do is to pray before reading. For that there is no incentive. It is requirement if they want to understand what the Scripture says. I tell them to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to them what He wants them to learn and live out. I don't want to "pay" my kids for helping with chores either, but a little allowance has proven to be a good thing to the point that even when situations have been tight financially they still do it. For me the important thing is to encourage the habit. Eventually they will get to appreciate the results. I guess the same thing can be said of Bible reading.

| | I thought it was only british kids who struggled reading their bibles. I run a pathfinder youth group with my wife and 2 other leaders. We found that just reading long passages even from youth bibles, they soon got bored and stopped listening, so we have been using short drama sketches instead of reading to them. They seem to be enjoying the sketches as we put a lot of thought how best to get them to want to find out in the bible them selves of the great truths of God's Word. They have stopped bringing their youth bibles though and I don't want them to get into bad habits. After Easter I am going to do a 'Read your bible' drive. My wife and I have decided that we will make a concerted effort to read ours more together and privately. What's the use of us preaching and not doing it our selves. Prizes and little treats for kids who read and tell us about what they have learned and also how God is helping them in their daily life. Bev Reid UK......could do with that powerpoint quiz!

| | PJ, I would love to get a copy of your Old Testament Jeopardy. This sounds like a great idea. I need all the help I can get! I think I'll incorporate the coins to our Java Hour - Once they receive a certain amount of coins they can get a Java Hour item (Java Hour is a Gourmet Coffee and Pastry Shoppe-like atmosphere we have 1/2 an hour prior and 1/2 an hour after church - for a FREE WILL offering to our YOUTH projects). Keep telling people about Jesus!
Blessings,
Rochell |
