The requests for this game have been overwhleming!

Here is the link to download the PPT game in .zip format. Place this in a separate folder and unzip there. Sound files included.

I trust you will be able to use it with the summarized instructions I included in the last slide. Make sure you are familiar with it before you edit and play. If you have any questions or problems with the files don't hesitate to contact me. Enjoy!

Bible-reading with teens is really tricky. The only way my fifth-grade Sunday School teacher could only ever succeed in getting us to read the Bible using two methods.

1. We were rewarded (somehow) for reciting the verse of our choice to her on Sunday mornings. Yes, there was a lot of "Jesus wept" going on, but it did at least get us to open our Bibles long enough to find the shortest possible verse to memorize.

2. She set up a challenge for us where she would have several phrases and tell us what chapter of the Bible they were in, and if we could find the right verse for three of them, we got a candy bar.

During my AWANA days our leader got us all to read Proverbs because we were having a contest to see who could find all the times the word "wisdom" appeared in the text.

That tends to be the best way to get teens into the Bible: with a game or challenge. You have to either be really creative or very upfront, otherwise they'll just write it off as you trying to trick them into reading that gigantic boring book. It'll also help if, every time they ask you a question, you flip open your Bible and look for a good verse/passage pertaining to that. But try giving them fun ways to get into the Bible. Have a contest to see who can recite the most Bible verses, remember the most Bible trivia, or write the best (or silliest) news report on the Egyptian plagues. The more you show them the Bible isn't just that thick, boring book the pastor drones about every Sunday, the better luck you have getting them to experience God's word for themselves.

"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." Hebrews 11:1

Last week I grilled a steak and ate it in front of the kids. When they asked for some I pushed them a tray of baby bottles and baby food. I pointed to the easel on which I had written Hebrews 5:12-14 and said I'd give them steak if they could tell me the lesson I was trying to teach them. Eventually we got to the point that they have to learn to feed themselves from the Bible and take hold of their faith. Then I brought out more steak and twice-baked potatoes for and Easter Feast. We celebrated communion at the end of the meal.

I think they will remember the lesson. I don't know if they'll go home and start reading their Bible's. My hope is that when the time is right, when they're desperate, the memory of Sunday School class will come to mind. They will remember that a lot of answers to life problems came from the Bible. They then will pick it up and find Jesus. I keep praying for the Holy Spirit to make them desperate.

All of your replies have been great and inspirational. I downloaded that Power-Point but have not looked at it yet. I think we will study the Bible using Josh McDowell's proofs of it's authenticity.

My first exposure to the Bible was my dad reading a chapter after dinner every evening. We went thru the complete Bible twice while I was growing up. It's time I encourage the parents to try that. My teenage son dives in to his Bible everyday because he see's his parents doing it.

Thanks for all your comments.

This is, of course, not ONLY a problem with teens!  A few years ago, Roger and I started a daily email devotion that includes a scripture reading and a little insight into applying it to everyday life.  I know it has gotten many in our church to start reading their Bibles, if only for 10 minutes a day (that's why we call it 10 2 Grow!)

Could you try something like that?  We gear each week's to the upcoming sermon and do one for each weekday.  That way by the time they come to church on Sunday, they've read and thought about the scriptures that will be used in the sermon or readings.

You can see some samples at www.harrodumc.org.  Just click on 10/2 Grow.

Without a doubt that is the answer to the problem, teaching them by example. Unfortunately, we only have them for a few hours once or twice a week if that much! I agree that it's time we target the ones who are directly responsible for their bible reading habits, the parents (of church kids of course). I had the blessed opportunity to preach a sermon during one of our denominations's Children's Ministry Sundays. My sermon was addressed primarily to parents. If you plan to encourage parents to help their kids read the bible don't be afraid to remind them of their parental spiritual duty. Far too many of them assume that because they are Christians and bring their kids to church that their spiritual responsibility is being fulfilled. Many of them also fail to realize that Prov. 22:6 is a direct command to PARENTS and that it's not the teacher/pastor's responsibility to train their children. We are here to help/support them in their endeavor not to take over.

The greater challenge lies in encouraging kids from non-Christian homes. Nevertheless,  it is not an impossible task for "it is not by might nor by power, but by the Spirit of the Lord."
