Our church has never done a VBS like this one. I have found that this is much more expensive than the traditional VBS while also much more interesting as well.  Does anyone have other ideas or have you found less expensive items to use for this shop?

We used the Group craft for K-5th, but we also do a semi-integrated preschool program where a couple of the crafts are different.  I thought the Group leather bracelet may be difficult for 3 and 4 yr. olds to lace through the tiny holes so we came up with an alternative.  I bought Pony Bead Lacing that looks like black leather (5 yd. /$1.27 at Hobby Lobby) and stained wood beads for them to make simple bracelets.  It still has the feel of a leather craft, but for a much cheaper price.  When I presented it to our planning team, some liked it more than the Group craft, but we stayed with our original plan for the K-5th kids.

I purchase some faux leather (vinyl) at Fabric.com.  I have not recieved my order yet, so not sure how easy it is to work with, but it will have to do.  I also saw an idea of using brown fun foam instead.

We actually did "Anklet Dance bells" last year as part of Jerusalem Marketplace.

I bought vinyl in a light brown & gray (from JoAnn's). Cut it into strips. Then the kids would hole-punch holes in them & string leather lacing & jingle bells through & then also add some yarn strips to hang down.  The kids could then tie them around their ankles & wear them during open & closing time.  It cost about $0.50 each to make. If you want more details, look on page 2 of this topic & I included the directions & picture.

HTH!
Merrilee
